My 2001 Chevy Impala wouldn't start and engine wouldn't turn over. Key would turn but nothing happened. No electrical, lights, radio-nothing. Alarm remote would not work and power door locks wouldn't work either. Car was completely dead except for check engine light was on and like a very low "power up" sound with three clicks coming from the passenger side dash/glove box.
If the battery has gone dead, it could cause the security system to go into full lock-up mode. If it has locked up the accessories will work after the battery is charged back up , but the power to the starter will be cut off and it wont turn over. You need to do the 30 minute learn procedure. A GM dealer will print it out for you and you can do it yourself. It's very simple if you follow the procedure exact. hope this helps and good luck.
I had same problem off and on for years and replaced many things. Problem finally stopped when I began using only the factory-made key that came with the car. A key I had made on my own still causes the problem.

Won't start how ? Does the engine crank when the key is turned to the start position ? Engine cranks no start ! Or nothing happens when the key is turned to the start position ? that is a no crank no start condition . Very different diagnostic procedures . Is there a padlock car symbol lit on the instrument cluster ? Anti-theft system problem !
Won't start how ? no crank - no start , which means when you turn the key to the start position nothing happens , starter doesn't engage. Or the starter turns the engine an it doesn't start an run. a crank - no start ?
Is the security light on or flashing ? The yellow wire goes from the key switch to the neutral safety switch, then to the starter. So bypassing the neutral safety would make the starter crank the engine, but would have nothing to do with the rest of the engine.
Would turn the key on no need to start it and unplug the ect engine coolant temp sensor. If fans come on then suspect a faulty etc which may not turn on the engine light. Which engine is in the vehicle so I can help locate the ect which is usually by the thermostat housing.
I had the same thing happen to my impala. It was the sensor in the ignition switch for security purposes. I had too many keys on my key ring, and it caused the ignition switch to not read my key right. Once I had the ignition switch repaired, I don't put so many keys on my key ring. It cost me about $300.
usually when u replace that you need to relearn the security system for it to start,,,,try to turn the key till the starter hits then release and leave it in the run position for 10 minutes, then turn the key off for 30 seconds and then repat this 3 times and then after the last time turn the key off for 2 minutes and then try to start it,,thats the manual way to relearn the key abd lock,,if that dont wokr take it to the dealer
Try under the dash, attached to colum is a switch that the rod goes into from your ignition key switch, that may need to be adjusted tword your steering wheel just a touch, they go out of alignmnet from time to time
Yes! After installed, trun key on (engine not running) for 30 mins.,trun off and back on for 10mins., turn off and back on for 10 mins. more; flashing light will go off turn off and try starting engine. Good luck! it's GM's reset for that.
