Question about 2004 Mazda 3

Hi! I have a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 with 99,000

Hi! I have a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 with 99,000 miles on it. I haven't had any problems until about a month ago. It seems that whenever i go about 60 mph for more than 20 minutes, i'll notice a little problem with the accelerator and the check engine light will come on. it stays on for the rest of the trip (i drive 45 minutes from my house, and then back the next day) and it's on the entire time. HOWEVER, the NEXT day i'll drive to work (about 10 minutes on the freeway going 60 mph), and the check engine light either won't be on or will turn off. Any suggestions? It's a manual, no issues other than that - I've owned the car for 2 1/2 years, had regular oil changes, no other issues besides this. Any suggestions?? THANK YOU!! :)

Dear porcelina172 Fri 2-20-2009 8:45pm EST (USA)

This sounds like it may be as simple as cleaning the water or gunk out of the gas tank which is what I always do 1st because it's easy and inexpensive.

If your fuel is contaminated with gunk, grime, water and/or bottom junk like rust this will cause the problems your having!

Fill the tank with High Test, Add some dry gas and a good fuel system cleaner or 2 or 3 and this should dissolve all the gunk and clean the injectors!

Read & follow the cans' instructions carefully.

If this cures the problem never let your gas tank get below 1/4 and especially never run it to empty as this is when the gunk and/or water will enter the system!

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.

How much should I reasonably pay to replace the Timing belt in my 2002 Mazda Protege 5?

replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.

Timing belt

usually around 100,000 miles depending on how the car has been driven. Or just wait till it breaks. I've seen over 200,000 miles on the original belt. If it were mine, I'd do it every 75,000 to 125,000 miles. I don't like being stuck in the middle of nowhere :)
