My 1997 ford mustang started having problems when I couldn't get it in 1st gear. It's a 5 speed manual. I had to go from 4th then 3rd, 2nd, then 1st. I was thinking synchronizers were off. Then, I was driving home and it's almost like the gears locked on me. I tried to put it in reverse and it made a screeching sound. Now whenever I turn the car on, it makes a horrible noise like marbles riddling around and a screeching sound when I try and put it in gear. Then there was an odd smell almost like something burning coming from underneath the hood. At this point I turned the car off.
There are 2 rods inside the transmission that had each gear on. The upper rod which is also the input shaft that goes through the clutch has 1, 3, 5. The lower rod that sits right under it has the other gears on it. Each one of those rods have bearings on each end. The upper rod may bearing may be bad and may have come apart inside the trans.

sounds more like the IAC, Idle air control valve.. they can be cleaned with carb and choke cleaner gently...
SOURCE: transmission problems (gear linkage)
The gear linkages are not correctly aligned.
Is the gearbox mounting in exactly the same place as when you removed it?
Even a 1/4 inch will offset the gears.
hope this helps
SOURCE: manual transmission takes effort to put in gear.
Have the clutch looked at. If the clutch is not releasing fully it makes shifting difficult. Have the trans fluid changed too, it isn't expensive and probably is listed under your maintanance in the owners manual
SOURCE: transmission won't come out of reverse
your Transmission is controlled by a cable on the mustang. it could have Came off of the transmission. it just snaps on to a lever on the transmission. or the cable broke. other wise it came unhooked from your shifter.
SOURCE: Manual transmission will not shift into any gear,
The problem sounds like the clutch. If you put it in 1st., then start it up, does it try to move with you foot on the clutch? Does the clutch pedal feel different than normal.
