Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

Starts then dies

I replaced the fuel pump in my 2000 GMC jimmy. It ran for a couple weeks then wouldn't start. I spotted moisture on the router and replaced it along with cap. Now it starts, immediately races up and then dies. Please help! thank you

I went through this process and installed a delphi when it acted up the second time. It ran for a couple weeks until we received rain. Then it wouldn't start. In checking the the distributor cap I spotted moisture and replaced the cap and router and now it start up consistently but once started the motor races up in rpms and then coasts down until it dies. I was tolded that it could possibly be the oil pressure switch. Does this make since? thank you

Aftermarket pump or OEM? If aftermarket, take it back and get a new one. Before you go through all that though, you may want to check the fuel pressure. You need to check the specifications on what the pressuresupposed to be for this model.

Hmmm. Doesn't sound like an oil pressure sending unit to me. A bad oil pressure sending unit would light up the check engine and/or oil light but shouldn't have any effect on the engine running. Save your time and money chasing gremlins by doing a little diagnostic work. Trust me , I've learned this lesson the hard way more than once. People tell you, hey it could be this, or it could be that. It's not their time and money. Hey it could be solar flares! Who knows. Anyway, I still would check the fuel pressure. This is usually almost as easy as checking air pressure in the tires... almost. You just need to get a fuel pressure guage is all. If there's an AutoZone near by you can rent tools for cheap and even for free sometimes. It still sounds to me like it's gas starved. You may have a good fuel pump but a bad/leaking fuel pressure regulator which would show up as low fuel pressure. The thing lets just enough gas circulate through the system to start the engine, but not enough to keep it running. Obviously I have no way of knowing for sure, I'm just suggesting that you eliminate possibilities by making an informed decision on facts you've collected by way of diagnosis instead of just start throwing in parts, time, and money until you maybe finally get lucky. We're all in the same boat. I hope this helps, I could use a rating upgrade. I'll keep an eye on this post to see how you make out. Let me know if I can answer more questions for you. Good luck.

Replace the fuel filter first. When you turn the key on, the fuel pump should run for a few moments, then turn off. If it keeps running, then replace the pump as well. Suggest having the fuel system pressure checked at the engine itself. Hope this helps!

Check your fuel regulator on also check your injectors - if you have a CSFI injection system you may want to replace it with a MFI upgrade kit. Trust me. - CSFI sucks
