While driving today my 2000 Dodge Neon suddenly started to increase speed on it's own. I was nearly asphyxiated from the fumes it gave off and had trouble holding it with the foot brake while stopped at lights and stop signs. As soon as I take my foot off the brake it takes off increasing speed until I hit the brakes. Even in Neutral and Park the engine revs at over 2000 RPM. What would cause this to happen?

Re: Fuel injectors stuck wide open?
Most likely it is an intake leak somewhere after the throttle body. check the intake manifold where it bolts to the head and see if you can find carbon expulsion around the intake channels of all 4 cylinders. if you do see then most likely the gasket is leaking. What i do is to take a can of throttle body cleaner and give little squirts around where the gaskets are on all intake manifold areas especially where it attaches to the cylinder head. Be carefull not to spray onto the rubber parts of engine. You do this while the car is running and you listen very carefully for any changes in the way it sounds. If you do hear something change everytime you spray the cleaner then you most definitly have a leak. Change that gasket. I hope this helps. Oh i forgot to ask if you have any check engine lights on.

With the ignition switch in the ON position, before engaging the starter, the PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for 2 seconds allowing the fuel pump to build up pressure. The PCM first tests speed density, then switches to the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The PCM also uses the engine coolant temperature (ECT), the throttle position (TP), and the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors to determine the proper air/fuel ratio for starting. The PCM controls the amount of fuel delivered in the starting mode by changing the pulse width of the injectors. This is done by pulsing the injectors for very short times.
Clear Flood Mode
If the engine floods, clear the engine by pressing the accelerator pedal down to the floor and then crank the engine. When the throttle position (TP) sensor is at wide open throttle (WOT), the PCM reduces the injector pulse width in order to increase the air to fuel ratio. The PCM holds this injector rate as long as the throttle stays wide open and the engine speed is below a predetermined RPM. If the throttle is not held wide open, the PCM returns to the starting mode .
You could have a dirty or bad mass air flow sensor .
You could have
Nikki is the engine light on, are there any codes, have you had a tune up or any other work done lately.when you say it won't start when warm(do you mean engine will not turn over, or does engine turn and refuses to fire.
If I had to guess failing fuel pump, they tend not to build fuel pressure when ran a while(warmed up) and when left to cool build somewhat better pressure.

Here is the description for the code. You need to check the sensor and the wiring back to the computer.
P0551 DODGE Description
Power steering pressure (PSP) sensor is installed to the power
steering high-pressure tube and detects a power steering load. This
sensor is a potentiometer which transforms the power steering load into
output voltage, and emits the voltage signal to the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM). The PCM
controls the electric throttle control actuator and adjusts the
throttle valve opening angle to increase the engine speed and adjusts
the idle speed for the increased load. Read more: http://engine-codes.com/p0551_dodge.html#ixzz21xtT1DTz
