Question about 2008 Toyota Highlander

1 Answer

2008 Toyota Highlander Sport AWD when starting off the engine seems to rev fairly high for very small vehicle movement. At idle engine revs around 1000RPM. Gas mileage is poor,17MPG for about 80% city, 20% highway. Is this all normal? Have owned many Toyota's ..Tundra, Avalon, Camry, none as loud or seemed to rev as high Tundra SR5 V8 4wd averaged 16mpg, thought the Highlander would do much better. Your thoughts please

Yes it is normal many customers complain about how the newer cars are not as responsive from a stop basically you have to hit the gas then the car goes seems to rev high to people with not a lot of movement becausse of this its because the newer cars are throttle by wire when you hit the gas it sends a electrical signal to the throttle to go instead of a few yyears back they were you hit the gas and the cable attached to gas pedal pulls back throtttle much more responsive hope this helps

SOURCE: poor gas mileage

Well,

I would start with a tune up, Spark plugs , wires , new fuel filter. Then check fuel mileage . The tires believe it or not have to have correct air priessure , This also is a factor in fuel economy.
If the fuel ecomony does not get better then you should have the fuel system check. The fuel pump could be weak pressure or a throttle body cleaning service should be performed.
The next step after this would be the fuel injector replacement. Now your are talking a investing a few bucks into the car. The most cost effective is to start with a tune up and fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank, You can pick up the parts at your local auto parts store.

SOURCE: 2002 dia rio getting 17mpg on e10 (ethanol) fuel.

Ethanol less energy than gasoline. So your fuel mileage will be less. Also if your engine wasn't engineered to run on you could damage the engine.

SOURCE: I have 1500 miles on my optima and my gas mileage

That's like asking, why are apples red or green
and not all the same.

You would have to hear your long version of
how you vehicle has performed, since you
owned it, then do some testing,to answer that.

I am guessing you want about 25mpg,
most of the time. Not the false advertizing.

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Intake manifold gasket is the most common cause of un-even idle.

IAC (Idle air control) motor is a small motor that adjust the idle.
In a cold AM,start up the car and turn on headlght, high beam,ac and radio.

Look for the IAC to see does it back down the idle as you shut off one item as a time.

IAC can be lube and save.

Grinding sound on pressing clutch in at high revs

The grinding sound may be a throw out bearing or the pilot bearing. The sticking throttle problem sounds like a linkage or cable binding up from possibly damage due to the impact from the accident.

2002 highlander vehicle shut off

I am having the same problem with a 2002 Highlander, V6. I have read in other posts that the Idle Control valve may be to blame. I took out the throttle body and cleaned it out thoroughly. Solved some of the problem but it will occasionally be difficult to start when cold and I drive a short trip. I plan on replacing the idle control valve in the near future. I found a temporary fix is to turn on the car and keep the idle up near 2000 rpm for about a minute (allows engine to circulate oil) and then rev up the engine to about 5000 rpm a few seconds at a time. I am then able to drive off with minimal problems.
