the same thing happened on my car, it was simply overheating. It has some kind of system that wont allow it to restart unless it cools a but. you can get it fixed easily. it was a real bummer in traffic jams.

Mercedes S300 TD 1998 model, engine do not work smoothly, do not stop, but the car shakes when standing still.

Sounds like its off a cylinder. Most likely an injector or a vacuum leak. You will need a mechanic to check it.

My 89 benz cuts off at 20 mph.

well the obvious solution is to drive at 19 mph. all kidding aside, does it do anything prior to this out of the ordinary, does the engine stop, or just stay at this speed? if the engine stops, are u able to start it right back up again?

engine wiring harness upper and lower could be degraded, coil could be bad, throttle positioner, fuel distributor could be bad and depending if its a half year car and you have an OVP that could be bad. Also after a full tune up have someone adjust the duty cycle.
