2003 Nissan Sentra won't start

Sentra GXE 4 cyl. New Interstate battery 1 week ago. Wife drove it to school, then wouldn't start on way home. I thought it was a batt. problem. Jumped it, and made it home. Then was gonna take it to Advance Auto to get alternator checked, but wouldn't start. Jumped, and it started, but turned headlights on, and it killed it. Tried jumping after that, with no success at all. Checked batt. with multimeter; it is very strong. Hooked reader up to car, and it reported NO problems. (no ses light, either) Checked fuses; OK. Fuel pump is kicking on.
engine won't even try to turn over. On key turn, just get clicking from starter, as well as from relays. The dashlights flicker. But while key was in ACC. mode, if I turned anything on (headlights, blower, radio) the dome light and dashlights would die. If I turn draw off, turn key off, then back on, dash and dome would return.

I'm wondering if one of these relays is bad? I'm not sure how to test them. Perhaps something happened when new batt. installed?
Any help would be appreciated, as I just spent $800 on maintenance for 2 cars, and am a bit tapped right now.

this answer given is simply a cut and paste from a previous post.
    http://www.fixya.com/cars/t1681228-2000_...

My car IS NOT EVEN TRYING to turn over when the key is turned.

The air filter is new, just replaced during oil change and batt. replacement last week.

I will check hoses, but I still think this is an electrical problem.

Thanks, sherlock. I'll check on that.

  • norwalk2001 Feb 20, 2009

I checked the cables and they are as snug as one could hope.

When I opened the car door, I noticed something new...

a sound of "click, click" pause, "click, click", over and over. It sounded like the hazard lights were on, you know? THAT sound. But it was not the hazard lights. The sound was coming from somewhere under the steering wheel, behind or around the fuse area.

  • norwalk2001 Feb 20, 2009

I took the dash off to locate the 'clicking' sound. It was from an ABS module. I unplugged it, and the clicking stopped, but it didn't really change anything. Whether that is plugged in or not, the car still doesn't start. I agree, it sure seems like a relay, but I sure can't figure out which one...

  • norwalk2001 Feb 20, 2009

    battery is at 12.53 Volts.

  • norwalk2001 Feb 20, 2009

The clicking, it turns out, was because the ABS relay wasn't getting enough voltage.
I took the battery cables off the battery, and cleaned them thoroughly. I greased the terminals, and reconnected.
    The car started right up.

I think my mechanic owes me one. Thank you all for your help. You saved me some dough.

That is definitely a relay. I unfortunately cannot tell you which it is, but call your local Nissan dealer and ask their service manager what relay is near your steering column in the dash. HE will be able to tell you.

if it just started this it sounds like the click is it is loosing connection with battery check all your cable connections undey a wire is loose or connection is corrided when you put jumper cables on the car cranked from the other vechicle's battery some how it is it loosing connections caheck to see if when battery was changed if another connection came loose

sometimes you can loosen up battery cable and twist cable on post and they wil start working fine. Have you put a battry tester on it and checked to see if the battery was fully charged might be a bad alt that drained your battery if not enough power in the battery it will cause all of your problems

Lets take a look at a couple of things;1 is the air intake filter ok ie;clean and dust free.2 check around the throttle body/inlet manafold look for vacuum pipes soft rubber type tubes check them for leaks.if this fails run a can of fuel cleaner through the system.the only other thing that would cause problems of this nature is your injectors.please let me know the outcome.

2003 nissan sentra gxe cranks then dies everytime wont stay running what is wrong

If the car has a chip key, the ignition may not recognize the key. Try another key or read the trouble code and the chip reader may not be working.

2002 Nissan sentra GXE has a code p0350

call nissan give them the vin number thers a recall on the cam and crank sensors do that first
if the recall has been done and ther are no sensor codes find the missing cyl.move the coils around to see if the mis follows if not check batt volts green/white wire good ground at the black/yellow wire after that you need a lab scope to look at the wave pattern of each coil.ther should be 2-4 volt sawtooth pattern all the coils should look abought the same.

Start the car up when it is cold and rev the engine up for 30 seconds, loosen up the radiator cap and see if there is pressure there..If there is you probably have a bad head gasket...Caution do not open cap if engine is warm...

Nissan Sentra 2001 gxe with code p0420

You will need a new catalytic convertor assembly. Yours is below treshold efficiency in other words its "no good".If you have it replaced, ask the garage/dealer to give you the old one back. Its worth some cash if its full. It doesn't matter thet it failed. They are going after the mesh inside of it and that is worth some $$$$. May not be much , but better than nothing.

2003 Nissan Sentra Problem overheating and heater doesn't work.

does the car overheat at idle or travelling down the road? if the thermostat was not changed, thats first step. checking it is replacing it. possibly air-bound. then i would suspect a headgasket problem.
