Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

2 Answers

1993 Buick Roadmaster with 66,000.00 original miles. Something going on with maybe the charging system. When driving the car want's to cut out but giving it gas keeps it going. The RPM goes up and down whiling cutting out and coming back. Happens constantly. Car still runs very good. We ended up driving home to MI from KY this way. Drove semi ok on hwy. Still did the charging prob. but if kept at 55 no slower or faster...not so bad but still present. battery is good, starts great, used gas treatment..what else could you suggest?

nothing on the car actually shuts down while driving and it does not stall or anything, the rpms go up to about 25 and back down to 20 within a second after giving it gas. Its almost like its choking on the gas and is why we used gas treatment, maybe water we thought in the tank. We drive this mainly for going long distance but I started driving it more now to find the problem. If it were a stick shift it would be like not using the clutch properly the jumping forward motion...not as bad but good way to explain...more like choking....

no need to aplogize, I appreciate all the help with ideas. Prob. going to have to take it to a dealership or garage to have it put on the computer for diagnostics...just hate that idea cuz they will say, it could be this or this or this or that....don't want to replace a million things before we find the real problem. She really is a beautiful car and drives like a luxury boat.....

Sounds like a voltage regulator....while running at a constant speed ..if things start shutting down...a/c stops, radio gets static, wipers slow..etc...the alt isn't suppling the juice needed so it takes from the batt...when the batt starts getting low the car starts to shut down things....tha alt may be putting out some juice but not enough during high demand

crank sensors are more about timing since there are no more distributors...cam sensors work for timing like vac advances use too...i think this is a bad or going bad alt/volt reg

i'm sorry....when i said shutting down i ment working intermittingly....headlamps dim,a/c blows but maybe not as cold, radio fades in and out....the reg works off of demand...the more things on that need juice the more the reg allows....when the reg or alt fail the systems pull from batt....your car is also computer controlled so thats also another draw

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor may be failing, this is not a charging system problem, if it where it would run fine until the battery was run dead and then u would have nothing, no crank no lights nothing, I had this same problem in my 91 Buick Rivera, it has the same engine and electronics. did almost exactly what yours is doing, crankshaft sensor fixed it, and $200 of course.

The second post u made still describes how my buick was acting, I to thought it might b fuel related, and yes like yours it never really stopped running, just lost power, have the system tested for codes, I bet u have some kind of ignition related trouble code. mine was intermittent loss of crank sensor signal, it send me in al kinds of directions, replaced the computer, the coil pack and ignition module, still the same issue, finally replaced the crankshaft position sensor and like I said it was fixed, and by the way I am a professional technician with 30 years of new car dealer experience behind me.

check the fuel pressure and fuel volume you could have a bad fuel pump. also check the TPS, throttle position sensor, it could be worn.

I have a 1993 buick roadmaster and while I was driving my belt broke and the engine the engine was on fire

Most likely the alternator or AC compressor seized up and caused the belt to smoke and break.

Steering on a 94 Roadmaster wagon jams suddenly when going to make a turn. Power steering fluid has been flushed and replaced. Problem appears to occur in rainy weather, possibly after going through puddle...

make sure the return hose for the power steering is good and the drive belt is good if the car has over 40,000 Miles on it i would change the belt as well Happy Holidays as always wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

My car keeps cutting off. When i go to start it, it wont turn over, and when it does, it turns off shortly after. i think my fuel pump is the problemm but how can i be sure?

Try changing fuel filter first, if not replaced recently. What's the weather like in your area? Cold, maybe try some gasline antifreeze or "heet" in case of bad tank of gas?

My car keeps cutting off

replace the fuel pump. it is internally shorted
by hitting the gas tank it jars the pump enough to make it run, then it shorts out agin and shuts off also perlace the fuel filter when u replace the fuel pump
common problem happens alot
