Hi, you are spot on mate with bottom ball joint if you have knocking noise a sort of rattle on rough road or over bumbs then this is 100% the bottom ball joint these are cheap to buy and its best to replace both sides as you will only get the same problem with the other one sooner rather than later.
These you can replace yourself as it is only a copule of bolts just need to have the car jacked up and on stands.
The only tool that you might need is a ball joint splitter as they tend to be seized on the bottom ball joints are cheap to buy less than £10 uk or £15.
Its better you replace them sooner rather than later because if the ball joint breaks off it will cause nasty accident so only drive if necessary so please get this done asap if it does go then it can do a lot of damage costing several hundred pound to repair also if it does go the car will be stuck where it is and will then need lifting off the road as you wont drive it so you are spot on with the fault but please get this done. If you have any problems then post back

Try google in the make of car followed by ball joint replacement this will then tell you how to do this process should only take 2 or 3 hours to do.
Hope this tells you what you need to know

Yes it is needing some sycronizers replaced probably and might also be needing a gear replaced in there. and also it will not hurt to keep driving it just skip shift like you have been so it doesnt cause any further problems .. if you keep using 3rd gear it might break off something in time just skip it .. thanks Jerry and holler if you need more.

Ball joint keeps going

This is a tough problem to answer. There are a lot of variables that can cause premature ball joint wear. The most common concern is the road you drive on, the tires and rims you are using and the mileage you have gone. The part that you installed, did it have a grease-able zerk fitting to add to the joint? Is the alignment correct, are there any other parts failing? (like the boot that covers the joint?)
