Question about 1992 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Sudden engine stalling

Lately I've encountered a problem where my 1992 VW Jetta Wolfsburg edition stalls out. Essentially, I'll be driving along at low rpm's and boom, done. The engine actually just shuts off. No lights, no buzzers, no sound. And no explanation. Auxilliary power is still on (the rad fan continues to whirr) but it's just not running. The same thing happens when it's idling. Suddenly it shuts off inexplicably. At first I was able to restart by just throwing it in neutral and turning it over while still rolling. That doesn't work anymore. The only solution seems to be pull over, let it sit for awhile, then restart and let it run at higher rpm's for awhile. Once the car is nice and warmed up, the problem seems to vanish. At first I thought fuel filter, but changing that did not solve the problem. Is it fuel related, or is it something to do with timing perhaps? The problem seems to worsten in cold weather, and it's not water in the gas line, 'cuz I have been pouring on the methyl hydrate with no results. I'm at a loss as to where to look next.

Hey dupunk8, thanks for the help. I never got to try your idea though. I was driving to work and my car died for good. I wound up getting a tow to the VW dealer and it turned out that the distributor, distributor cap, plugs & plug wires were worn out. They changed them, and say my oxygen sensor is pooched too. I think I'll give the oxygen sensor a try myself though. I appreciate your replying to my question though! : )

P1296 Problem(vw jetta 2001 wolfsburg edition)

There is a common fault with the cam belt driven waterpump on VAG engines as they use a plastic water-drive. The water-drive on the pump shaft breaks up or free and no longer circulates the water. Replace water pump.

VW Jetta 2001 wolfsburg edition 4 cylinder 1.8 turbo engine is having rough idle. check engine is on and it has a code for O2 sensor. the car drives fine in high speeds. the engine has not shut off only...

It sounds like either the mixture is bad or you need a new 02 sensor. If you have never replaced the o2 sensor I would get that done anyway. Next I would get a general tune up and have your throttle body cleaned.

Speedometer will not work every thing else works awsome but not the speedometer it is a 1990 VW jetta Wolfsburg edition 170,000 miles on her.

uses a cable from the gearbox to the speedo head ,just remove the speedo head and drive a bit and see if cable turns or jack up a front wheel ,same difference ,think you will just need a new cable ,easy job to change

2003 vw jetta wolfsburg bogs on early acceleration

Don't know if it applies to your diesel but most later gas engined vehicles have a 'cold start' valve that supplies additional fuel to the fuel/air mix along with boosting the idle speed until some warming of the engine is sensed.
