Is the GEM the same as the PCM ? 2003 F250 no codes,no light on 4x4 switch in hi 2 wheel now and the fuse is good

Hi. No the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) is more of a monitor. The GEM did body related functions like keyless entry, electric windows, auto lamps and locks, stuff like that. On 4wd models it did Electronic Shift on the Fly 4WD functions.

Dosent go into 4 wheel drive with the dash knob. 4 wheel works if I lock the hubs.

Your front drive axle and transfer case is controlled by the General Electronic Module (GEM) as well as by vacuum lines. The problem could be in the switches, the shift motor, the wiring, the vacuum lines, or a failure of the GEM. It would be best to scan your GEM for fault codes before any attempt at diagnosis.

NOTE: Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damages may result.
The generic electronic module (GEM) is the only multi-function module on this vehicle.
The GEM constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The ignition switch position is very important to the GEM functionality Erratic or unexpected GEM functions can often be traced to problems with these GEM inputs.
The GEM controls a variety of systems:
  • instrument cluster warning indication and chimes
  • interior courtesy lamp control
  • automatic headlamp control
  • daytime running lamps (DRL)
  • wiper and washer (front only)
  • heated rear window
  • one-touch down power window
  • delayed accessory
  • power door locks (including SMART, autolocking and luggage compartment lid release)
  • remote keyless entry
  • perimeter anti-theft
