Im working on a 99 Grand Prix and the ABS light is on. I checked the code and it came up as an open or short on the left front wheel speed sensor. I just asumed that there was a problem with it and order a new wheel bearing thinking that the sensor was in it. This model isn't that way. How do I change the wheel speed sensor or how do I test the sensor to make sure its not wiring? Thanks

Re: Wheel Speed Sensor on a 99 Grand Prix
I use a scanner to check to see all wheel sensors.getting a signal . it take two people. your scanner have to be type to check abs system. you can use ohms meter . it will tell you your wheel sensor is open or shorted out.

quite easy throw the code reader away for a start then work from basics ,disconnect each sensor in turn and check for continuety ,also the wiring connections for corrosion then if all the sensors check out then you check the toothed rings that the sensors pick up on and make sure they havent corroded away or come loose on the drive shafts especialy the front drive shafts as this is a common fault on vehicles used in northern climes where their is snow and wet rain
Hi, the wheel speed sensor and tone ring are built into the bearing/hub assembly. Make sure the new hub contains an ABS wheel sensor and the cable was properly connected. If it is properly connected, the new hub may be defective.
hi sounds like a wheel speed sensor you will need to get a scanner to check for a ABS fault codes you may even have to get the person to monitor the wheel speeds with the scanner to find the wheel speed sensor that is dropping out most likely a front wheel speed sensor
hope this helps you
Hello! This indicates a fault with the wheel speed sensor/ABS sensor. Any major auto parts retailer can pull the details of this code (which sensor) for free, which will help you identify if the wiring is loose or damaged or if the sensor will need to be replaced. If you need to replace the sensor - you will need to replace the entire wheel bearing assembly, as the sensor is internal.
If your trac and abs are both on. the problem could be a wheel speed sensor.
on some GM cars this sensor is built into the vehichles hub unit. making the bering and sensor one sealed unit. cheap hub units can be gotten (under 100 bucks) at autozone
bad front bearing/abs sensor The sensor is part of the bearing,or the wires are bad so that when you steer it open circuts and thinks the wheel is stopped. need to read codes or use a scan tool with live data to see which wheel the computer thinks is stopping. then look at that wheel for problems
These lights are on because the system has a fault and it has disabled itself, so you have no anti-lock brakes or traction control right now, you will have to have the system tested for trouble codes by a shop with the proper test equipment, a GM dealer is your best bet.
Have the systems scanned for trouble codes with a scan tool. The ABS and Trac lights are on because there are fault codes stored.Access the fault codes, and they give you a direction that needs repaired. You likely have a wheel speed sensor damaged or just not working.Repair the speed sensor, clear the codes, all systems go.
