You likely have either an aw4 or a chrysler 727 in there (depends on engine) 727 has the reverse/neutral switch above the rear left corner of the pan. AW4 does not (and is smaller) To better identify, there should be an id tag on there somewhere!

crank sensor on the back of the engine. the wires may be pinched between the the transmission and the engine block. it will missfire if this is pinched

Transmission not working when hot

well sounds pretty bad, did it start slipping before all of this and gradually get worst? anyways when this happens the cheapest diagnostic fix is pull all of the bolts on the bottom of the tranny to dran all the fluid, not sure if this tranny has a filter but pretty positive it does, pop a new filter in there you will see it when you you drop the pan, let all fluid drain and refill with the specific type of tranny fluid it calls from you can find the quanity and type from the auto store when you get the parts, substitute one of the quarts with lucas stop slip and hopefully it will bring the tranny out of it. otherwise your bands are shot and need a rebuild/tranny replacement. good luck and take care

Automatic transmission

Cherokkes have an asian-warner tranny.
Grnd Cherokees have 727,999, or other Chrysler trannys.
You cannot interchange them.
