It is for the most part is under the driver door just inside the frame and the other place to look is on the passenager side in the frame just in front of the rear tire.

Engine turns over a few times before it starts.. pumping the accelertor seems to help.. 2003 ford escape v6

It might have a clogged fuel filter. Have you checked the fuel injectors? Check your fuel pressure to make sure it is gas related. It could be something else. Might be a bad plug or wire. Maybe even a cam sensor.

Where is the fuel filter on my 2001 ford escape 3.0?

On the 2005 it is actually part of the fuel pump in the tank. However, there is a fuel filter located under the vehicle, passenger side by the gas tank.

The engine runs as long as you maintain pressure on accelerator? The most probable cause is a clogged fuel filter. Once the filter becomes clogged, when you release the accelerator, there is not enough fuel pressure to maintain the proper amount of fuel through filter. Have the fuel filter replaced and that should clear the problem.
