2002 chevy malibu catalytic converter

Ive had the car for almost 2 years, bought it used. since 2005 i have replaced the catalytic converter 3 times (the first, then #2 2 weeks later, #3 2 months after) and the check engine light came on again 4 weeks ago(6 months after #3). had the codes checked and again, the catalytic converter. the 3rd c.c installed was a different brand in hopes that would fix it. no luck. what do i do?

no idea on either solution. id have to ask my dad. he is the one who pays for stuff like this, and he would know. as for mileage i think its been pretty good..though i only drive about 150+/- a few per week so i hardly remember to keep track while driving to and from college back home each weekend. i fill up with gas about every week & 1/2 to 2 weeks depending on activity.

You probably have way too much unburned fuel in your exhaust system (how's your mileage?) or possibly a failed oxygen sensor that is giving false information to the computer.

Car won't pass emissions after replacing catalytic converter

Did you scan for codes to see if there were any besides the catalytic convertor? Unless she's running leaded gas it shouldn't have to be replaced yearly. Is she using an additive that puts lead into the system? I would also check the wire hareness for the O2 sensors. It's not unusual for them to wear and rub a bare spot in the insulation. This will case a short and give a false reading to the computer. Is there any chance that there is a leak in the exhaust? If air is getting in at a joint or a small pinhole ti will screw up the O2 sensor readings.
Hope this helps.

P0430 code on 2002 Chevy Suburban

Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2
As the code description implies the P0430 code means that the vehicle's control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P0430 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first. could also be vacuum leak or exhaust leak

Where is bank 1 sensor 2 on 2000 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic.

Bank #1 sensor #2 is the sensor located after the catalytic convertor. While sensor #1, which is located before the catalytic converter, is used to control the vehicle's fuel strategy, sensor #2 is used to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.

Diagram of the location of a down stream o2 sensor on a 2005 chevy malibu.

Hi,
Downstream sensor is screwed into exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter on most models. Depending on your exhaust configuration, your code will say bank 1 or bank 2 or no bank designation. Some have converters coming off each cylinder bank (exhaust manifold off cylinder head) if only 1 converter in system (no bank) there will only be the one O2 sensor downstream.

What will happen if a person removes the catalytic converter from a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu and does not replace it.

You will cause problems with the engine management system. The engine will not perform as it should without the converter installed. The system is calibrated for a converter. Besides it is illegal to remove a catalytic converter and not replace it. It is a Federal Crime that comes with a hefty fine to do so. You also could not sell the car without being held liable and you are polluting the atmosphere. Do not remove the converter.
