I have a 99 intrepid with a broken shifter cable the new dealer cable which is revised was alot smaller in cable diameter then the original i made sure shaft in trans was well lubricated and moving freely befpre i hooked up new cable but the cable still broke after one day . It seems that the small diameter in the new part is to small to handle theforce it takes to shift the transmissin lever the first couple movements were smooth and easy

Have you spoken to the dealer, especially someone in service about this? They may shine some light on it.

The shifter cable end is broken loose. What do I need to replace

You will need a new or used cable that is not broken. From the dealer or a junkyard. Putting it on should be fairly easy; just reverse the procedure for taking the old one off. Good luck.

Transmission wont go into park

Get help, have helper hold set parking brake and hold foot brake, pop shift cable off of linkage bracket on trans, try to shift it by hand. Only starting in N may be broken internals on neutral safety switch.

Hard to shift into park

I have a 97 intrepid and also had problems shifting in to park, the problem turned out to be the body to frame isalator bushings were bad .these rubber bushings are under the car mounted to a U shaped frame member that help hold the engine and transmission in place once the bushings go bad the transmission shifter cable becomes miss-alligned and cannot move properly
