1996 Nissan Pathfinder v6 5 speed back up light switch position

The switch that controls the backup lamps on a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder looks completely different and is in a slightly different location depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. However, in ether case, the switch is located on the transmission.

On the manual transmission it is called simply, "backup switch".
On the automatic transmission it is part of the "inhibitor switch". (also known as "neutral safety switch")

I am trying to fill my transmission fluid on a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 with a 5 speed manual transmission-where is the fill hole located? What fluid should I use? Is Dextron II ok?

A 5-speed Nissan Pathfinder uses a different type of transmission fluid from an automatic; therefore Dexron II is NOT okay. This vehicle uses "gear oil" --- specifically 75W-90 GL-4 if you have low mileage. 80W-90 or 85W-140 can be used if you are up there in mileage (closing in on 200K?).

This type of service needs to be performed from underneath the vehicle.

If you have a set of ramps, now would be a good time to get them out of the tool shed. Exercise care in driving up the ramps as they can be tricky with stick shift vehicles. Once on the ramp, put wheel chocks on the rear wheels, put the e-brake on, and if possible, keep it in gear (I use reverse).

Even without ramps, there is sufficient ground clearance from this SUV for you to check your transmission fluid. But then again, the more working room, the better.

On the transmission housing, you will find two plugs. One is at the bottom (drain plug), and one is higher up on the driver's side (fill plug). If you wish to add gear oil, simply open up the fill plug on the upper driver's side. If gear oil starts to seep out, don't bother adding any --- it's full. If no fluid comes out, stick your pinky in the hole and try to reach down and see if you can touch the top of the fluid level. Top it up, then. Gear oil usually comes in quart containers that have a long, pointed tip that allows you to "squirt" the stuff into the fill hole. Convenient, no? If the fluid level is so low that you can't even touch it, you might want to consider draining what's left (why add new gear oil to old sludgy gear oil? Otherwise, fill it up until it starts to seep out of the hole; then screw the fill plug back in.

I hope this helps; take care of your SUV.

I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN TITAN. I PRESSED ON THE GAS TODAY AND IT FELT AS THOUGH THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING. AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED MY TRUCK OFF FOR A FEW...

There is not a filter that you can buy for this vehicle. The filter that Nissan used is a metal screen that is part of the valve body. There are places that do a transmission flush and fill and that is probably the easiest way to go on this one. But if you plan on doing it yourself, make sure that you use Nissan approved transmission fluid so that you get the most out of your truck and transmission. On some of the models they used synthetic and on others they did not. You can pull the stick and it will advise you of the correct fluid for that transmission. I hope that you have found this information useful.

PS. I have a 2005 Frontier 200k and a 95 Pathfinder 300k...still running and pulling like new

My 2006 nissan pathfinder shutters or vibrates sometimes when I speed up on the highway. It stops when I pull off the gas pedal.

That would be a u-joint that is worn out causing the vibration. Check for excessive play in your drive shafts,. The front drive shafts are common for bad u-joints.

How do I change the automatic transmission fluid in my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder?

there will be a plug at the bottom of the transmission. pull the plug, let it drain, and replace the plug. Refill with the recommended amount of fluid out of the owners manual. Run the vehicle through the gears a few times with the car started. let it idle till the temp. comes up, then check the trans fluid level and add till full

Checking and servicing the automatic transmission

The cap your reffering to is the dip stick. You need to remove the 10mm bolt that holds it in order to check/fill the trans. The trans takes Nissan J Matic fluid ONLY use of any other fluid will damage the trans and void your warranty(this is why it is bolted in). You will see it printed on the handle of the stick when you remove it. You can use the drain plug on the trans pan to drain the old fluid out and then refill it at the tube with a funnel.
