Question about 1986 Ford Escort 4-Door
OK, so there is this pasture race. 100 laps around a quarter mile dirt track. Rules are there must be 4 drivers, car must be a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, and it's value cannot be over $750. Well, we decided to find a car, and we did, and we have an issue. It is an 86, Mercury Lynx, which is a rebadge Ford Escort. It has an automatic transmission. It will not shift out of low until 35 and then it shifts again at 65. It will not go into 2nd, I guess. Did I mention we are a team of all girls, the only chick drivers? Oh, and we don't have a pit crew. It shifts really hard for all gears. I told you all of this in hopes you might really rack your brain. Help!
Did you try shifting it manually by pulling the shift lever back to "1" then move up to "2" then finally "D"?
I think those old ATX transmissions had a governor that can be changed from the top of the trans without removing it. I think it is held in by a couple of bolts. Clean it with carb cleaner first. Easy repair.
Good luck and have fun. Report back findings and race rsults.
