Question about 1986 Ford Escort 4-Door

1 Answer

86 Mercury Lynx which is a rebadge Ford Escort

OK, so there is this pasture race. 100 laps around a quarter mile dirt track. Rules are there must be 4 drivers, car must be a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, and it's value cannot be over $750. Well, we decided to find a car, and we did, and we have an issue. It is an 86, Mercury Lynx, which is a rebadge Ford Escort. It has an automatic transmission. It will not shift out of low until 35 and then it shifts again at 65. It will not go into 2nd, I guess. Did I mention we are a team of all girls, the only chick drivers? Oh, and we don't have a pit crew. It shifts really hard for all gears. I told you all of this in hopes you might really rack your brain. Help!

Did you try shifting it manually by pulling the shift lever back to "1" then move up to "2" then finally "D"?

I think those old ATX transmissions had a governor that can be changed from the top of the trans without removing it. I think it is held in by a couple of bolts. Clean it with carb cleaner first. Easy repair.

Good luck and have fun. Report back findings and race rsults.

hey found an old tech service bulletin. may help. shows governor location.

    1988-89 TOPAZ

The governor hydraulic circuit filtration system has been improved by using a new design filter. The filter has also been relocated inside the ATX case to reduce the chance of dirt reaching the governor assembly. Late 1988 model year vehicles, and possibly some early built 1989 models, will have both the new and old filters installed because of production techniques.

If service is required, only the new filter will have to be replaced. Refer to Figure 1 for the new filter location. The older filter, located in the case under the main control assembly, can be removed and thrown away.

    Figure 1 - Article 88-23-7

Until the soft seal and overhaul kits are revised to include only the new filter, the use of the filter provided in the kit is okay. When filter replacement is required, it is necessary to make sure both filters have been removed.

Will a 1999 ford escort inner change parts with a 2000 mercury mystique

It depends on the part.
The Contour/Mystique cars were based on the Mondeo chassis from Mexico and Europe and replaced the Tempo/Topaz models which were bigger than the Escort/Lynx models.
Most parts would be different.

My 2002 gmc envoy goes through all the gears except slips in third

Its the overdrive sensor 3rd gear you will slip with 4speed band trans
This overdrive gear setting if your sensor is not kicking in then you are due for trans maintenance as 3rd gear is shredding slowly away learned this from dirt track quarter mile super stock racing pray that your gear is intact as a trans shop with micro snake cam can only determine the length of time you have on your gears and trans inspections are free threw amco certified shops

Fuel system running rich

Sounds more like it's running lean. Have you checked fuel pressure at the rail? Could be the filter. Also try pulling the vacuum line off the regulator to see if the diaphragm is split and leaking fuel into the manifold.

Is a 97 2.4L GM motor capable of oval track racing performance. I've heard the oiling system and water pump can't handle it. Also been told that they work fine? What is what?

yes the 2.4 dual cam works well and fits great in most eco stock racing rules. I run one on a 3/8 mile high banked dirt track. The engines are light and so are the cavaliers. The waterpumps are not the easiest but i did not find it near as hard as everyone online cried about to change. Im not sure yet on the oil pump having a fualt to the bottom end issues, i lean more on the counter balance shafts airiating the oil at high rpms.

Hello I race a 1996 cavalier on a dirt track and I have been having some issues that don't seem to bad.the car will run fine for 4 laps depending on how much I get on it then it will just loose power I...

What kind of air box do you have? After racing in dirt for a few laps, is the air filter getting clogged up? I would say that or possibly intaking in hot engine air (cool air atomizes the fuel better). I'd start there... then move on to fuel issues.

I race a 1994 saturn on a dirt track. My car runs

Is it a stock engine?

If so check your ECTS water temperature SENSOR not sender, it's located on the right side of the block towards the bottom drivers side engine compartment.

Change the harness connector to it as well it usually goes bad due to corrosion, the original ects sensor was plastic which cracks, the replacement is 8 bucks at auto zone and is brass.

If this goes bad your engine will run rich, waste a lot of fuel and foul the plugs causing the engine to cut out.

If this is fine then check your ignition system for failures due to vibration.

While racing on a 1/4 mile dirt track. my 1991 stanza is loosing power. along with this it has started drinking fuel at about a mile per gallon

This doesn't sound like a normal engine problem, I suspect that you have a fuel leak that is spaying fuel somewhere. If you are not getting the proper amount of fuel to the motor, that would also explain the lack of power.

Mercury Lynx, rebadged Ford Escort, automatic won't shift

on top of the transmission there is a white plastic cap with a clip that holds it on. inside there is a governor assy that might be sticking or the gear might be worn.
