Question about 1986 Dodge Ramcharger

1 Answer

1986 Ramcharger would start fine until 2 days ago. I'd drive around some where and then it would reluctantly start. Then it wouldn't start unless it sat for at least several hours or put a charge on the battery and it would crank/start as normal. Did a tune up on it, but engine is now acting like it's not getting enough juice to really turn it over and then it gets slower and slower to the point where the engine won't turn over. Battery tested at the shop I bought it from and the other day I disconnected the positive cable from the battery and engine kept running, so I know the alternator's good. Checked for spark from the distributro wires and getting spark. Talked with a mechanic who said my started may be bad as it draws so much juice in just getting the engine turned over.

Run an extra ground to the block and replace your battery cables. RC's are notorious for suddenly losing ground or having cable failure. Visit the vehicle help board at Ramchargercentral.com if you need more info!

Engine is suddenly getting no fuel. Turns over great. There is plenty of gas in the tank. It wouldn't run after driving around two days ago, then it ran all day yesterday all day yesterday, then after we...

Could be the fuel pump. Try hitting the bottom of the fuel tank a few times while someone try's to start it, if it starts then the pump is on it's way out.

I have an automatic 4x4 it drives fine but will not reverse. Is this a gearbox problem ar something minor?

i have an 86' trooper and i put it into 4 wheel drive one day and reversed and it got stuck and wouldn't move until i put it back into 2-wheel drive and drove forward

the rule is your not supposed to back up when in 4x4 drive it's bad for the axles so when backing up put it into 2-wheel unless it's a major emergency. it's bad on all 4x4 cars, unless it's an awd car :] hopefully this helped

Check for power with 12VDC test light at switch down at the brake pedal. Should have power on one terminal without pressing pedal, then press pedal and see if power going through switch to other terminal. If going in but not coming out, replace switch. Can use jumper wire between the 2 connectors to confirm brake lights come on.

I'm assuming yours still has the stock CAD system with auto hubs. You will need to be in drive, going less than 35 mph to shift in and out of 4HI on the fly. Your RC must be stopped to go in and out of 4LO. You can visit Ramchargercentral.com to learn more...the members over there are awesome!
