Reverse gear pops out

I have a 1998 jetta wolfsburg edition and the reverse gear will not work, and pops out of gear, is this a transmission problem or something else?

i have the same problem. yes it is in the transmission. it is the teeth on the reverse gear that are chipped or worn down. you need to purchase a new revers gear if you can find one which i've had a problem doing. but its either that or try to find a cheap transmission.

usually a sign that that gear set is starting to go out or has already, standard transmissions CAN be rebuilt, but it's usually easier to have a used working one put in place instead. good luck to you. does it pop out of gear?

Reverse

98 Jetta GLS  reverse gear can lose teeth and "pop" out of gear especially when backup up an incline.  Dealer fixed it once under warranty but claimed driver misuse.  Problem occurred again and we don't want a costly rebuilt transmission.
