Do I have to replace the engine computer, or is there anything else I can look at before replacing it?

  • samaro6 Feb 20, 2009

A noid light was used to test for power. When the injectors were disconnected from the left side of the engine, no difference was noticed in engine idle. When any injector was disconnected from the right side, the engine stalled.

SOURCE: 1985 corvette no pulse to injectors

Very important that if you are not savvy of working on your Vette ...you would be better off - taking your car to a dealership for repairs on your trouble codes. However if you feel that you want to, First locate your car's alcl this component is located just below the instrument panel and to the left of the center console. Remove the plastic cover the first two slots to your right are the A & B slots.
The A slot is the diagnostic slot and the B slot is the ground slot. Insert the computer key into these slots if you do not have a computer key, a paper clip or wire jumper clip will do, (with the engine off) this is very important...now only put the ignition key to on ( not start !!!) the check engine light will display a code 12 which is one flash followed by two flashes. This code will be flashed three times ..followed by the trouble code stored in your car's computer.

What ever the code is it will be flashed three times. Have a paper and pencil ready and write down the code.

Code #12: Normal No Codes.
Code #13: Open Oxygen Sensor Circuit.
Code #14: Coolant Sensor Circuit Low.
Code #15: Coolant Sensor Circuit High.
Code #21: Throttle Position Sensor High.
Code #22: Throttle Position Sensor Low.
Code #23: Manifold Air Temperature Circuit High.
Code #24: Vehicle Speed Sensor.
Code #25: Manifold Air Temperature Circuit Low.
Code #32: EGR System Failure.
Code #33: Mass Air Flow Sensor High.
Code #34: Mass Air Flow Sensor Low.
Code #36: Mas Air Flow Sensor Burn-Off Function Fault.
Code #41: Cylinder Select Error.
Code #42: Electronic Spark Timing.
Code #43: Electronic Spark Control.
Code #44: Lean Exhaust indication.
Code #45: Rich Exhaust Indication.
Code #46: Vehicle Anti Theft Fault.
Code #51: Faulty Mem-Cal.
Code #52: Fuel Calpak Missing.
Code #52(1990-91 Corvette Only): Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Low.
Code #53: System Over Voltage.
Code #54: Fuel Pump Circuit Low Voltage.
Code #55: Defective ECM.
Code #62: Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Circuit High.

Please remember that if you have the computer key installed in the alcl and you start the engine (you will ruin the engine's computer) only put the ignition to on (not to start).

If you should get a check engine soon display.. you can use the above procedure and codes to buy the right part or at the very least to keep from getting taken for a ride and be made to pay hight prices for some inexpensive module that you could have installed yourself.

If your engine displays a trouble code ... your engine will go into limp mode ..it will still run but very poorly. You might be able to reset the computer if it will not start (just to get home) by disconnecting both battery cables and re-installing them ...this is not recommended ..but if you are stranded it might help unitl you get your car home or to a repair shop..good luck.

Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: Error codes P0301(cylinder #1 misfire)

The ECM is very possible.I assume cylinder 4 injector is providing gas?The connection for cylinder 1 is probably a connector with pins correct? If you can bypass the ECM,that would get you closer if not give the answer.I would try using a wire straight from the battery to the injector electric somehow without damaging the wires. For years,if i had an extension cord which was old,I cut off the ends and save it just for troubleshooting occasions like this is a good example. If you do the bypass, try to hold the wire with something other than skin.I have leather gardening gloves, pliers. The gloves are better for steadiness and pliers are metal. It is not likely that it should melt but doing electrical work for so many years,an ounce of prevention is worth way way more than a pound of cure.If it did melt,it would stick and probably a couple weeks worth of pain.I would like to know how you make out.If you reply back to this post I will get an autolink to your post.Good luck! Greg
P.S.Was your error code from the car's own system and not a shop?I am trying to figure out what year that system started.
Thanks

My 92' corvette is hard to start. It cranks for about 5 seconds befor it starts. Replaced the coil, and the ignition control module. After it starts it has a slight smell of gas for a few seconds

I can almost promis you have bad fuel injectors. it is a known issue on your car, replace the injectors with a set of bosch series II injects from fuel injector connection get a flow matched set with viton seals ... hope this helps search google for fuel injector resistance test if you want to verify the problem you can also go over the injectors with a hair drier if it changed the way the engine runs its the injectors, the build more and more resistance as they warm up... until failure

I had a similar problem on my 92 LT1 and it turned out to be the opti-spark was bad not signaling the injectors to pulse, if your bypassing the VAT to turn it over then the injectors should fire as well, on the 92 the crank sensor is built into the opti-spark distributor as well, if it turns out to be the opti-spark spring for the MSD sealed and vacuum vented cap or you'll just be replacing the thing every six months, you can test the opti up were it runs into the coil, I dont remeber the exact proceedor but it is on line,

What is the ideal operating fuel pressure for an 89 Corvette w/ LT-1 TPI

The 5.0L injector is sized to deliver approximately 4.05 milligrams of fuel with a 2.5 millisecond pulse or 18.13 lbs per hr at approximately 36 PSI. The 5.7L injector is sized to deliver approximately 4.83 milligrams of fuel with a 2.5 millisecond pulse or 23.92 lbs per hr at approximately 43.5 PSI. This information is typical for all manufacturers and flow rates will vary slightly even between identicle injectors.
Good luck and hope this helps.

92 ford probe with two cylinders dead one on each side. i do get spark, fuel, and compression. but i dont get fuel in the cylinder but the injectors are not clogged.

Check the pulse on the two injectors.Purchase a noid light at the parts store, that will fit the injector harness, see if the noid lights will flash,if they do,then replace the injectors, this would be the only thing it could be.If the noid light is not puling,or flashing, then the computer is the problem, seeing it is the distributor of the pulse on time.

Disconnect the + wire Coils Take #1 Spark Plug Out Get a helper Use Compression Guage if not Available, Just put your finger over the Spark Plug Hole, have help BUMP the Starter over till You can Feel The Compression at your finger you need #1 at TOP DEAD CENTER on its Compression STROKE Fine tune it by using a STRAW in the Plug Hole to feel the PISTON Move UP To VERY TOP Dead center----------------------------------This is Tricky but don't Loose these Instructions------- If you have the OPTI_SPARK Ignition System My Books show all about it but Nothing on the Timing "MARK" as this is the step I Stoped at Above..
