Question about 1996 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

ABS activating interminently

I have a 96 Towncar. The ABS has been periorically activating, usually when the car is completely stopped sitting at a light. Today, the abs activated contunisly while I was backing. My foot was off the brake the intire distance of nearly 250 feet, while it did it's thing. Once I stopped the car and put it in drive, the brakes operated normally. The light does not come on during this time. Fluid level is ok. Never fails to stop, just makes terrible groaning noises under the dash, and the pedal moves slightly. Any ideas?
Thanks

I have more recently discovered that the ABS activates nearly everytime at exactly 8 mph. This happens without using the brake, and with the car moving forward or backward. It usually only takes 2 or 3 seconds of traveling at exactly 8 mph for it to activate. It will continue until the speed is changed either up of down a few mph.

I am having the same intermittent problem. A sound begins under the dash, the brakes will actuate, and the ABS light will come on. Does this indicate an unsafe braking situation; that is, suddenly lock up the brakes while driving?

My towncar slows down when the traac active light comes on what is the problem

Keep in mind that Traction Control applies the ABS to the individual wheel when it spins too fast, slowing it down to the speed of the other wheels so that it can gain traction.

The abs brakes are starting to stutter in my 96 lincoln towncar. i hope it doesn't cost too much to fix because it's my daily driver with only 90,000mi.

check fuses to make sure abs pump is working properly.but at 90,000 miles you probably need new brake pads
not expensive if you know a good mechanic

My 96 lincoln towncar is making a noise when under hard braking feels like the accumulator is pulsing or failing no abs light

The noise is normal ( somewhat) Things that can make it happen too often are mis adjusted tire pressure. wrong tires ( all the tires have to be the same size) worn out tires low grip. The ABS system will work normally only if a tire is trying to skid. if the seed senser dectects a tire is going the wrong speed conpared to the others or the car is slowing down faster than the design limites the system will cycle and not turn the light on. If say the back brakes are worn out the fronts may cycle the system as the front is the only thing stopping the car.

I have 99 lincoln towncar it have the problem with the abs track light on

abs and traction control both on usually means a wheel speed sensor is bad or unplugged and that the ecm is not getting a speed signal from one or more wheels.
