Question about 1999 Mazda 626
It would only go into the top 3 gears now it only goes into 3rd?
I would have it checked asap. mazda 626 models are infamous for having transmission problems - overheating due to lack of proper cooling etc etc. avoid the hassle and expenses of a transmission rebuilt and have it checked asap!! me and my husband learned the hard way...

SOURCE: Gear shifting problem
The 1st thing to do is have a test run on the transmission control module to see if any trouble codes are present, next have you ever serviced the transmission, fluid and filter change, should be done at 60,000 miles, on occasion this can cure problems like yours.

Sounds like the pressure plate! Try this, rev the engine for a sec then when it starts to slows down try to put it in reverse - if the gears grind, its the pressure plate which will come with the clutch kit for about 125-175.00.
*rack and pinion is steering not trans! Separate issue??

Check transmission fluid. If that is full, try changing the fuel filter. It could be starving for gas, and trying to shift but can't. It could also be the speed sensor, or shift solenoid.
