SOURCE: No crank, no start, new battery

I've ha the same problem on my 95 civic. Changed the starter, a relay, checked the ignition switch, distributor... and found it was a faulty ground from engine to engine compartment. To check this last solution, simply attach a wire big enough between the engine and chassis and turn the ignition key. If the car starts, you've found your problem!

There's two possibilities. No spark, or no fuel getting to cylinders.

I would change the plugs regardless. If you haven't driven it in a year and it was parked with fuel still in the carb. You will probably want to pull the carb and rebuild it. The old fuel is likely gummed up inside the carb.

Sorry..... 1 notch off is just not good enough. It has to be exact , then if it doesn't run start looking at other posibilities.

Remember that the camshaft turns twice eash time the crank turns once. The distributor rotor works off a gear on the cam.
Your rotor could be off a bit , or it could look exactly perfect the way it was when tou took it out , and still be 180 degrees off.
You have to get your engine to "top dead center" and make sure everything is the way it should be.

A timing chain ( or belt ) can cause permanent and fatal damage to the valve train and pistons in motors that are "interference engines" Find out weather yours is. In a non-interference engine , the clearance between the valves and the pistons is large enough to alow them to move out of time without crashing into each other. An interference engine is not so forgiving.

The fact that your engine cranks makes me hopefull that it is a non interference engine , and that damage has not been done.

Try to find a haynes manual for you vehicle , it will walk you through the steps for most repairs.

You mean wont CRANK or CRANKS but WONT RUN???? 4 cyl or V6 auto or manual trans????????? The 8th VIN digit would be most helpful as there are 4 different engines for that car. Its really cheaper to check items before you replace them. The starter should have a smaller BLACK wire that should have power on it when trying to crank the car. You say it wont crank, then check the neutral switch on the trans. Try putting it in neutral to start it. If it has a manual trans, the clutch switch on the pedal may be bad. There is a starter relay in the fuse box under the hood that powers the starter, does it click if you turn the key to start? if it does then the relay is at least trying to work, but doenst mean the contacts inside are good, If it does not click, then the neutral switch may be bad.Check the BLACK/YELLOW wire at the trans switch, if it has power on it, the switch may be bad, ground that (Black/Yellow)wire and see if it cranks. I dont know if there are any other relays in the fuse box that you can swap for the starter relay for test purposes.

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. I have 2005 I changed the starter and battery good but it still won't start


First does it crank, if it does then check to see if the fuel injectors are getting fuel.....could be a fuel pump...

second....if there is nothing when you turn the key and the battery is good and the starter was replaced...it could be a bad ground.....thats the ground coming off your battery and goes to your chassis of the car.........let me know how you make out.

car wont crank or car wont start? I would say your battery cables are bad,, acid gets in from battery and erodes internal cable parts... need a Meter to check it out.. put the meter on battery while someone tries to start it, if the voltage drops from 13.5 to 10 then it is trying to turn over, I always have the new starters tester before I leave a store, they are remanufactured in Malaysa and they use old parts in most of them..

if you learn the art if testing, you win this battle.
here they are.
NO CRANK 101: (rule 1, it must be failing to find a cause)
it not failing, nobody can fix working cars, but they will try, and charge you for doing nothing at all. your choice.
its failing....
  1. does it crank with jumper cables to running car?
  2. are all 4 ends if the battery cables clean and tight?
  3. when you hot wire the starter solenoid, keys in pocket , does it crank now?, if yes, good, if not the starter systems are failing.
  4. if yes, it cranks now, then the KEY line is dead.
ill stop here,,,,, if key line is dead, wiggle the shifter, or try neutral cranking.. at shfiter. (bingo that>?)
battery at 12.6vdc charged and rested before starting the tests.
use a cheap voltmeter.

put what parts in?, do tell , the battery would be first. no?
try a loaner battery?

if the car always cranks then say so, that is called
cranks but does not start. period.

Does the starter spin the motor at normal cranking speed? If there seems too much friction, try turning the engine over by hand to check if the engine turns freely. Put a socket and wrench on the center crankshaft pulley bolt and turn clockwise. If you cannot turn the crankshaft with a wrench easily, then the starter can't either. Turn the crank all the way around to check for something preventing cranking.
Is the battery still enough power to crank at normal speed? If it's already too low, recharge it, and try again.

First of all. We have put 2 new starters on this car recently. We thought the first might have been a fluke. However we had the 2nd checked and it tested fine as did the battery and alternator. Problem is...


what do you mean by wont start?? engine cranks but wont run? engine wont crank? Is the anti-theft light flashing? is the car in park? did you put it in Neutral and try to crank it?
