Re: Broken and missing button for Overdrive switch
Did you try replacing the housing and button? There could be a reason why that is, perhaps the overdrive has or had an issue from prior owner because of the transmission having problems. If your not comfortable with replacing the housing and button, get a few qoutes from a reputable shop, then decide if it is worth it.

one will be earth the other two to the others stop you engaging overdrive in lower gears.u can extend wire and move switch to dash you can bypass lockout giving overdrive in all forward gears but engaging reverse with overdrive on will destroy the unit so not a good idea if the moved switch on dash is easier to miss
is the switch working do you hear it clicking when pressed on off is the light on the dash or not is the check engine on or flashing you might have a transmission problem but before all this sometimes the wire breaks inside the shifter for the od switch so check the wire if not broken inside the shifter
The most common reason on the ford truck of the overdrive not working is due to the wiring to the switch, if its on the shifter then check the wires running to the switch, remove the column covers and check for broken wire and also check all the fuses as that the wires may be chaffed and ground out agaist metal column and pop fuse, this is where i would start, good luck.
this one's easy, you need a new multi switch and it just un plugs by grabbing and simply jerking it straight out
the arm is not expensive and is available at any auto-zone or other similar parts house for around 20 bucks
Tum the overdrive switch on for good fuel
economy and smooth driving. If engine braking
is needed in the "D" range or if repeated
upshifting and downshifting between the 3rd
and 4th gear is needed when climbing a
gentle slope, it is recommended that the
overdrive switch be tumed off. Tum the
overdrive switch back on immediately afterward.
When the overdrive switch is tumed on, the
transaxle will automatically upshift to the second,
third and overdrive gears. When the overdrive
switch is tumed off, the transaxle will not
upshift to the overdrive gear. For normal driving,
the selector lever should be left in the "D"
position and the overdrive switch tumed on.
If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the
accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. The
transaxle will automatically shift to a lower gear,
depending on the vehicle speed and load.
if the overdrive light is blinking then there is a problem with the TCM transmission control module. if you have access to a scanner, pull the codes, that will lead you on the path to what is wrong. if you dont you will have to take it for service.
this could mean there is a problem with the transmission, but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?
