Car shudders when accelerating...

Hi - I have an 2002 Audi A4 1.8T. When I accelerate, the car shudders when it reaches about 15 mph. The shuddering stops as I increase speed. Sometimes it might shudder again around 40 mph but does stop. Does anyone know what this might be? Any idea on cost to fix it?

Thanks!

Are you referring to the spark plug coils? I don't think its that. I've had that problem many times. I just press on the accelerator, when it gets to about 15-20 mph the gas pedal shudders but the car seems fine after that. Kind of annoying in start and stop traffic. Seems to start happening after the car has warmed up.

Same problem with the shutter at 15mph, new plugs and coil packs made no differance. In trouble shooting I can hold the brake put the car in drive and slowly increase engine rpm and the engine will stop increasing rpm at 1400rpm (even with foot to the floor). Any thoughts on a possible Throttle Valve control Module Problem. Car is a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T with 70,000 miles

could very likely be the coil pack... cost would depend on where you go to take it to have it fixed.

Get it put on a code reader and see if there are any codes first, this may lead you in the right direction rather than do a guesstimate

There are so many things from a Coil pack to a Transmission. Have Independent Audi specialist check your car out. If you are near South Fl check out German Car Depot Car shudders when accelerating... - 10_16_2014_1_17_18_am.jpg

My wife's 02 Audi A4 1,8t had the same problem after talking with Audi (coil pack/spark plugs) we replaced them all and the problem still persisted not to say that won't fix your problem but what I found to be the problem was 3/8 vacuum line (shaped like a S) that comes up on the right hand side between the oil filter and the fire wall that comes from the turbo check valve assembly (its hard to locate and should be done with the engine cool) up to a valve assembly that connects to the intake manifold, what was happening was the hose would become spongy at the bottom (you will have to squeeze the hose from top to bottom to notice the difference) and as the engine heats up it would cause the hose to collapse. Once I replaced the hose and the computer reprogrammed the fuel mixture (about 25 miles of driving) the problem seems to have been correct. Good luck.I had also replaced the turbo check valve about three years ago because of a severe hesitation when you first apply gas (turbo check valve may not be the proper name.) Sorry. Sounds like the torque converter is chattering and likely will have to be replaced. Have a trans shop verify that. The other problem is a separate question and should be posted that way.

Dealer says front axle needs to be replaced

Shuddering is a good sign of bad axle joints. You can look at the axle boots yourself, if they are ripped, they should be replaced. If you hear clunking or feel shuddering or wobbling, then axle will need to be replaced.

I'd check the motor mounts. Shuddering upon acceleration indicates movement of the engine inside the compartment. Best of luck.

Transmission shudder

I had a similar problem on my 93 Accord after I accidentally threw the car in reverse at 50 mph, obviously wrecking the transmission. When I got it rebuilt I was told the transmission pump was to blame (clogged with "shrapnel"). I, and your car manual, recommend taking the car in to get the tranny looked at. Especially considering you just had the fluid changed which is what would normally cause the problems you are describing.
