89 F150 302 4x4. recently started running rough, then really rough with black smoke out of the exhaust. No power on hills. Got it to my garage and now it won't start.Turns over, fuel delivery ok. Has new filter.

blac smoke means valve guides or rings are worn-u wud need a rebuild in time--but 1st try sae straight 40wt oil or some additive like lucas or othr thickener----also a tuneup w new plugs/cables--distributr/coil may help or some professional injector cleanin
signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator-- the vehicle will run rough, the engine will not start ( usually in the mornings,) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. 1- black soot on plugs-2-black smoke from tailpipe-3- running rough-4- stalling, good-day! repost if need be.
Take it to an Autozone or O'Reillys and they will test the computer for you. It should have set a code, but you don't know if the code light works so its your best bet. Sounds like it is running rich and the crankshaft module is not advancing the timing.
This could be as simple as the EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valve stuck open. This valve is supposed to open at a specific time, recycling the exhaust gasses back through the engine. If they stick open, the engine is not getting the correct air mixture to burn the fuel efficently, causing black smoke and lack of power. Have the garage remove and blank off this valve. If it runs ok, then a new EGR is needed.
