I recently got the rack and pinion replaced on my 02 mitsubishi lancer, and there is still play in the steering, and when I hit a bump in the road, the car wants to ****... I went to les schwab and they told me that I need new bellow boots, and they were not replaced when the rack and pinion were. Could this be my final problem? Please help!

All they do is keep dirt and water from getting into the steering unit, they are seals, if your steering is acting up it is to late, the damage has been done by the torn boot.

Rack and pinion 2006 lancer

1. Jack the car onto stands and remove the front wheels.
2. Remove the drivers seat and the lower dash covers over the pedals.
3. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. Place the steering wheel at center, and remove the key, to lock the steering column for the rest of the job. If you don't do this you WILL destroy the air bag clock spring under the steering wheel, and they are VERY expensive and fiddly to install.
4. Move the carpet / mats as necessary and undo the splined connection on the pinion shaft.
5. Drain the power steering fluid and disconnect the hoses from the rack. The hose connections will be very tight.
6. Undo the tie rod ends, and the two clamps that secure the rack to the frame. With some wiggling the rack can be removed.

Jeep steering wheel play

Most common reason? Idler arm, which basically just holds up all your steering components. When worn, your car will pull to one side or the other after hitting a bump or ridge in the road. Worn tie rods will cause slack, as will your steering gear/rack and pinion. Best way to tell is to have someone get in and turn the steering wheel left and right, from 9:00 positon to 3:00 position, while you get under car and watch your steering components work.. Everything should be tight with no visible movement between one componet and the other. If you see anything wiggle, or hear a knocking sound, or you see visible play anywhere, repalce the worn component.

I recently replace the power steering pump on my '02 Sentra GXE, but it looks like I have a new leak coming from the rack and pinion. The reason I replaced the pump is because it was leaking only from the...

Not necessarily any thing you have done except put the units under the pressure they were design to operate at and that has shown up the weak seals . The bushes in the rack and pinion wear out and now the worn seals cannot control the pressures escaping past the worn rack seals. Have a steering specialist check it out but the replacement part or work to be done will not be cheap

Can you adjust thebrack and pinion on a 2000 Sebring?

Hi Jim, What about the rack ends? They also wear out. Chock the wheels and apply the parking brake, jack up the front end and test for play by moving the road wheels left and right by hand. If the play is there remove the rubber boots and check for wear on the rack ends (coming out from the rack) If you see movement from the rack its self the whole unit must be replaced. Regards John

Rack and pinion? have play in wheel no sign of leaks new power steering pump installed

Hi Gunny, If your vehicle is fitted with rack and pinion steering also check the rack ends for play. The rack ends are the rods which the tie rod ends screw onto. The other end fits onto the rack of the rack and pinion. To work on those you will need to remove the rubber boots and loosen the locking washer, they can then be loosened with a wrench. If they are worn the play will be evident in the steering. When replacing them also replace the rubber boots. If the boots are worn and road grime and dust enters, you will see leakage from the rack and pinion in the near future. I always thought the Dakota was fitted with a steering box? Regards John
