Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Auto Zone test said I have to buy another computer. I found one at the junk yard for $100.00, but we don't know where is the computer chip in the 1998 Dodge Sport Caravan. Please let me know before I pull out everything from the car. I'm a woman, but a good fixer. Thanks Ilona

The pcm (computer)is beside the battery under the hood.
1 remove the battery (disconnect cables and undo the battery tie down)
2 remove and set aside the pdc (Power distribution center)(don't unhook the wires) its beside battery (2 screws)
3 unplug and remove the pcm (2 electrical plugs and 3 bolts)
Hope this helps!

Abs light on dash, brake lite on dash, speedometer not working, jumping in and out of overdrive.

You have multiple problems. Make sure the brake fluid is at the proper level. Most of the time when I see this and the fluid is correct with no other mechanical issues it turns out there is a short due to an after market alarm that was installed incorrectly. Make sure you don't have a caliper sticking on one of the wheels which will cause the ABS and Brake Lights to come on. You'll also want to make sure your emergency brake isn't stuck. The ABS module malfunctioning would explain the ABS light and the Brake Light but not the speedometer issue. I have given you a lot of things to check because you need to be sure those are all working correctly. Because you added the Speedometer issue this is most likely going to be a short somewhere in the circuit or a possible issue with the ECM. It is possible a faulty ABS module could cause this, before you go get a new one though, try locating one in a local Junk yard and switch it out. If the lights go out you know that is the problem and you can go get a new one, I don't recommend using junk yard ABS parts for anything other than testing. With those lights on you can go to Auto Zone or Advance auto and ask them to connect the code reader to the vehicle and get a better idea of where you need to look.

How to build cars

mcdevito75 here, That would be a project and a half, First you:d need a Chassis, available at the junk yard, then Front suspension parts, have to buy brand new, maybe $600.00------$1,000,00 then you"d need the engine, Transmission and rear end, chances are all would have to be re-buit, maybe $6,000.00--------$10,000,00 then you"d need the cars electrical Harnesses, also buy brand new, maybe $3,000, then you"d need a body, from the junk yard, maybe $1,000.00 Then you would need the tools, Hoists, Jacks, Know how, welding equipment, and all associated testing equipment, Then you"d need to check with your local motor vehicle dept. for any of their requirements. They do sell auto body re-building kits, for a Volkswagon Chassis, abiut $6,000.00

Replacing the Exhaust Pipe

Why would you not go to the auto parts store, buy what you need, return home and install it yourself.

You must have lost your mind,if you think that a junk yard exhaust system is anything but rusted metal.

2004 Concorde, 130k miles, recent new auto trans and replaced sensors that tell if fuel is too rich or to lean. Now the car will randomly lose power, tapping on the gas will eventually get the car moving...

130k miles, you should have plugs, wires replaced and also have the coil check. You can go to auto-zone and see they can pull the code for free, that will help narrow it down instead of playing guessing buying the wrong parts and hopping that will work and it can get expensive. I would check the air mass sensor. there is no way of testing the unit and it a self seal unit. No place i know of offer a bench test for the air-mass flow sensor; the only way is to replace them. they are very expensive new and from the dealer, get one from a junk yard or ebay..fairly cheap. air mass sensor measure amount of airflow interring the intake and the computer compute the air and fuel ratio mixture. If the air mass sensor is not working properly than computer will get incorrect air measurement which effect on how computer function the fuel injectors delivering the correct amount of fuel into the intake and cause the engine not to run properly. Weak fuel pump and fuel regulator can cause of lose power. Pressure test can also be done to make sure you getting correct amount of fuel pressure.

I think that the fuel pump for my 2001 yukon xl has failed. Should I take a chance on pulling one out of a junk yard car and is there a video on how to change or instructions? Is there a way to tell for...

The only true way to tell if its a fuel pump or not is with a fuel pressure test, you can rent the testing unit at auto zone, as far as getting one out of a salvage yard is, you get what you pay for and if it don't work your out your time and money for a junk yard part, on something like that you go new not used you stand a better chance of it working, as far as changing it, you know it in the tank right? Thats why you want to go new because you only want to do it once.
