How hard is it to change the ignition switch on a 1997 firebird?

Are you talking about the key switch or the ignition switch itself. If it's the ignition switch it is located on the side of the steering column about halfway between the dash and the floor. Two screws hold it in place. If it's the key switch and a tilt wheel you'll need special tools to get the steering wheel off and another tool to get the lock plate off.

1997 pontiac firebird will not crank and has no power at instrument panel wwill crank if breached at starter

No warning lights or gauges with key on? Possibly the ignition switch has a malfunction, or the switch has lost its power supply. One would need to check for power in and power out on the switch.

Your ignition takes a specific key, they are chipped. If the ignition was changed and the decoder wasn't , this is the problem. You may be able to call a dealer ship and give the VIN number and get the measurement in ohms of the chip, Maybe. Then go to a hard ware store and they can duplicate the key you have with a chip key. Be prepared , this is not a $2.00 key

Yes, you damaged steering column lock and switch. Just replace ignition/lock switch and connect all wiring and lock lever and you should be good to go.

Ignition switch for 89 pontiac firebird

I'm afraid I don't know how much. You have to have special equipment and a contract with GM to get the needed information to make the changes.
If you have a security chip in your ignition any attempt to start the car with out the key will disable the ignition.
