Question about 1994 Dodge Caravan

Engine will crank,but not start

Driving along no problem, suddenly engine quits no warning,no indications on dash.Have checked coil getting spark, changed cap and rotor, checked fuses, when I turn key on can hear fuel pump.Have not dealt with relays, don't know how to check them,it has several of what seem to be the same type, thought about swapping them out with a good one to check.I would like to exhaust all possibility's before going for a PCM!

thank you for your ideas,I read all the related problems on this site put them together and found the problem to be elec. fuel pump.Replaced it and fuel filter, runs good.66 chrgr nice job!

66chrgr,your suggestion started me thinking, realizing I had checked everything but fuel to engine, once I did, a little fuel in the throttle body I was able to start it.However I also found after fixing the problem I had a very nasty engine knock(contaminated oil) after oil change all is well.

I dont think it's your anti theft. If you're having issues with it I would bypass it completely to eliminate that possibility allowing you to troubleshoot easier

Could a sensor cause a no reverse condition when all forward gears work fine if so where is it

It is entirely possible to suddenly lose reverse like this if a shift solenoid or shift valve fails.

I'd expect though that there would be a trouble code showing on the dash. Some cars do this by blinking the O/D indicator light, so check that the Check Engine and O/D dash warning lamps all work by observing them when the ignition is first turned on and in those few seconds when you hit the starter.

First while running engine light came on. Turned off. Now will crank but will not start.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

From start to end troubleshooting these problems I suggest you to check the help link below and follow its procedure: -----

Mostly all types of car no start problems are discussed here with solutions:---

Check engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

For more help, I suggest you to refer the help link provided below. These will let you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light coming up on dash panel.

Driveing along and engine quit running. tried to start but would not. keep cranking and fuel came out of airfilter.

I hate to give bad news, I have forgotten when Chevy started putting Coil packs on that particular vehicle. If it has a Distributor pull the distributor cap and crank the motor over while you are watching the rotor assembly. If it doesn't turn the Timing Chain Broke. If it has a coil pack, pull one of the Valve Covers and crank the motor while watching the valves. If the valves don't cycle the the Timing chain is broken. Now, assuming the timing chain hasn't broken then you need to check the fuel pump.

I have a 93 grand cherokee lerado with the 5.2 engine. the first thing to happen is the ignition coil went all of a sudden while driving. replaced the coil and ran great for two weeks then it started to...

How did you determine bad coil? was it not sparking period? I ask because coils rarely if ever go bad... What is the fuel pressure? Are the injectors firing? Spark plugs fouled?
Other sensors to check: Coolant temp sensor? Manifold air temp or intake air temp sensor? O2...These will change your air/fuel mix at temp if they're bad...

I was driving along a snowy road in minus temperatures and then suddenly on the dashboard a warning red light came on like an injector and the engine died completely straight away and would not restart.

if the check engine light came on. have it scanned to find problem code. if no scanner any auto parts store will scan for free. but this may be a bad crank sensor, that is how they act when bad. it controls the timing on todays vehicles. if crank sensor is bad it will die while driving, and may not start back up.

Ouit running while driving 65mph on freeway

Does engine still crank? If so you have to check for Fuel, spark, compression. when your engine quit ..odds are good you lost one of these. check for fuel since modern electric fuel pumps stop working without any warning. You should be able to hear the pump momentarily when you first turn the key to "ON" If good check for spark, modern "coil pack" spark systems have a few weak links. if engine cranks and you have spark and you don't know how to check for fuel spray some starting fluid in your air inlet and see if it will start momentarily
