1987 Subaru GL Hatchback - timing per manual not working?

I just bought a 1987 Subaru GL Hatchback. It was running great for the first day but then it died while I was driving it. It seems a sprocket locked up (welded itself basically), which tore up the timing belt. a mechanic-type friend of mine replaced all the parts, adjusted the timing according to instructions in haynes repair manual (matched up dots on engine etc) and put my car back together. but now the car won't fire up. it wants to, it chugs but won't turn over. the mechanic-type friend says it sounds like the car isn't firing on all cylinders; though he doesn't know what the problem is or how to fix it. my sister seems to think that due to the way the sprocket froze up and how it chewed up the belts (seizing the whole car), the lining up of dots to adjust the cars timing is no longer an accurate method to use. help! i'm a single mom, with limited mechanical know-how, desperately trying to get this car running again.

SOURCE: 1990 SUBARU LEGACY problems

Check for water in spark plug tubes, ign. wire connector ends & coil pack for corrosion.
All marks go up, the crankshaft sprocket has an arrow that you don't use! if you position the crank sprocket where the key way is down you'll notice that the sprockect has a timing mark at the top of one of the sensor pickup teeth, use that. Here is a rough home made pic. I hope this pic made it, no conformation that it did.

I am looking into buying a 1987 subaru GL. What kind of gas mileage do they get?

If it is 4x4, around 30-33, a little more for 2wd. Also a manual trans. will get at least 3-4 mpg better. Keep it in tune and a clean fuel filter for best results.

first check the timing belt because it may be broke.Another solution could be a clogged catalytic converter. It really sounds like a timing belt.Remove inspection cover for the timing belt and have someone turn over the motor and see if your camshaft is turning.
