(1998 Gr. Marquis) I just found the culprit of my fuse #13 for the speedo, temp and votage gages. I had to remove the gear shifter cover which was not difficult also the metal brace across the bottom and the ignition key, but it was a tiny exposed burr in the overdrive shift button wire just at the end of the gear shift leaver. I elec. taped it up and now, no more blown fuse!

SOURCE: instrument cluster inoperative,fuse#13 15 amp

Hi, the wiring diagrams for the fuse are pasted below. It is possible for a fuse to blow without a short, if the right sequence of events happens to occur. If a fuse blows a second time, then we suspect a short and start looking for it. The wiring diagram does not lead to any obvious points. A short can occur in the cluster or in anything connected to it. This design seems to try to isolate the cluster from the components it's connected to, so I would first suspect the cluster as the source of the short. If a new cluster did not solve the problem, I would disconnect things that are connected to the cluster, put a fresh fuse in, and then reconnect each component until the fuse burned. You can try this without changing the cluster to see if the fuse will burn with everything disconnected. This is a way of confirming the problem is in the cluster before buying a new one. I'm not sure what the other expert told you, but this is the common line of thinking in the repair industry unless there are recalls or bulletins that indicate a common problem. I did review the recalls and TSBs, but did not see any applicable to your issue. You can read them here if you like: http://www.edmunds.com/car-maintenance/recalls.html?year=2000&make=&model=&styleId=12669&engCode=8VNAG4.6&transCode=AUTOMATIC&mileage=100000&zip=45390&type=recall
I hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

Check under the dash at your Brake pedal interlock switch. It is timed with the gearshift Interlock and Ignition switch. This switch usually gets hit by feet and dislodged or broken. When you shift out of Park, the switch is toggling to a broken piece and shorting out.

The brake interlock switch is at the top half of the pedal lever. The other part of the Interlock uses a rod or cable in the steering column Ignition switch and mates with the shifting mechanism.

2005 merc grand marquis Headlights keep blowing a fuse

Does your Grand Marquis have head lamps with auto lamps ? Which fuse keeps blowing ? Could be a shorted LCM - lighting control module ?

Lighting Control Module (LCM)
The LCM eliminates the electronic interference and heat associated with the thermoelectric devices used previously. The LCM is a microprocessor-based module that controls several vehicle subsystems. It responds to electrical input signals from various switches, sensors, and external modules..
