A squealing sound coming form engine compartment, just started. Not a constant sound but pulsating with no constant pattern. It's got to be somewhere in the belt system, right?

Try removeing the serpent belt ...take idler pulley...if it lose in any way ..before doing all this just listen to the front of it ...look care fully at idler ...if it looks kind of cocky in any way change it ...check your belt too ...and all fluid levels for power steering ect ....good luck

First, to start out free, I would take your old belt loose and check all your pulleys to see if they feel like they are grinding or making any noise. Sometimes the squeak is from your belt pulleys that have bad bearings. These are usually easily changed by just removing a bolt. If all your pulleys seem to be good I would change the belt. Be sure go get a higher quality belt. Gates and Goodyear make really good belts. If you get a cheap belt, you will be right back where you started. Also most parts stores carry a 1 year warranty on their belts and they will honor the warranty if the belt starts squeaking.
Any questions, feel free to ask!!! Please rate!!! Thanks!

You might have a dry bearing in the alternator. I've had a squeaking noise from them.
Testimonial: "thanks! the noise is not constant. it cycles with the rpm's. it like squeak-squeak- squeak and progresses as the rpm's increase."

Also when I cut the engine off, the squeak continues for 2-3 seconds.
