Remove front wheels , one or both at a time , remove caliper and rotor , remove cotter pin and nut on shaft , there are three or four bolts on back side of hub , remove the hub bearing and shaft should slide out , i would see if complete rebuilt assemblies are available , faster and easy this way

I owned a 93 GC 4x4 and I did replace my front axles with CV joint axles. The new axles came with CV joints, with a rubber boot and all so yes you can.

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee, and its 4WD all time, and my front end drive shaft is broken at the cv joint end, can I just take it out and make it a 2WD??

Theoretically, yes you can. This is assuming the 4WD being engaged "all the time" is not from the hubs not unlocking.

Passenger side axel cv joint, can i just replace the u joint myself

For just a little bit more $ you can buy a complete axle already assembled. If you have Universal joints (not c/v, with boots), then yes they are fairly easy to do but you need to remove the brakes, rotor and hub bearing to get either of them out out. (easy instructions in haynes or chilton)

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4 4.0L. Just recently bought and there's a popping noise in the front and when turning sharply it's like the wheels lock and the jeep refuses to move and it's also...

sounds like a bad cv joint in one (or both) of the front axles. is the popping sound more prevalent when in reverse, with the wheel turned? if so, i'd assume that it is a bad cv joint and one or both front axles will need to be replaced.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee and i think the cv joint is gone. the cv joint has grease all over it like it exploded and it only makes the clicking sound every other day if not at all. i have pick. can...

Hi:
Usually when the CV joint boot fails, the grease is slinged all over, and after awhile, dirt gets in, and you start to get clicking noises, especially during turns. Sometimes a mechanic can clean and relube the joint, and install a replacement boot, but often the axle assembly is a more economical option.

What's involved in changing out cv joints on a 96 grand cherokee?

the joint is fairly easy to change. the hardest part is getting the hub assembly off. you will need a36mm sokcet for the hub nut.i had to use an 18" breaker bar to remove it.

U-joint replacement

Yes, but the cost of the u-joints/cv-joints (both ends) plus the labor involved in swapping out the u-joints, make a good argument for just replacing the half shaft as a unit. It's a lot quicker and cleaner.
