Overdrive won't engage on 4l80e transmission

While driving in overdrive, it just locked up and died when it tried to shift into overdrive. It started back up, but it won't shift into overdrive. Do I need a new tranny or torque converter or what?

SOURCE: 2003 chevy silverado will not shift into drive or overdrive.

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in

heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself

to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

SOURCE: f150 transmission neutralizes when shifts to overdrive

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

SOURCE: 2001 impala will not shift into overdrive

your overdrive clutch hub has gone out/worn out.
It can be replaced or you could have the whole transmission re-built or replaced with a low mileage one from the salvage yard , etc at a lower cost..(which is what I did)
This is common on these trannys.

2006 terrano 3GMR (import) erratic-jumping in/out of O/D on the straight

The erratic jumping in and out of overdrive (O/D) on your 2006 Terrano 3GMR with a 3.2L engine could be caused by a few different issues. Here are some possible causes and fixes:
  1. Faulty speed sensor: The speed sensor provides input to the transmission control module (TCM) to determine when to engage overdrive. A faulty sensor can cause the TCM to think the vehicle is going too slow or too fast for overdrive engagement. A mechanic can test the speed sensor and replace it if necessary.
  2. Low transmission fluid level: Low transmission fluid level can cause the transmission to shift erratically or not engage overdrive. Check the transmission fluid level and add fluid as necessary. If the fluid level is low, it's important to also check for any leaks that may be causing the fluid loss.
  3. Worn or damaged overdrive band: The overdrive band is responsible for engaging and disengaging overdrive. If the band is worn or damaged, it may not engage properly. A mechanic can inspect the overdrive band and replace it if necessary.
  4. Transmission control module (TCM) issues: The TCM controls the shifting and engagement of overdrive. If the TCM is malfunctioning, it may not engage overdrive or cause erratic shifting. A mechanic can test the TCM and replace it if necessary.
It's recommended to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the issue, as the transmission is a complex and vital component of the vehicle.

Is overdrive activated when the light at the end of the gear shift is on or off on a Lincoln navigator 2001

If the "Overdrive Off" indicator is illuminated, this will prevent the torque converter from locking and engaging overdrive. This can be useful when traveling through hilly regions or when heavily loaded to keep the transmission from continuously hunting for the correct gear. When the light is off, the transmission will operate normally, including locking the torque converter and engaging OD. You should normally drive with the light off. If the light is flashing, that's an indication of a transmission diagnostic trouble code being present.

2004 Ford Sportrac having problems with trans OD flashing on and off and sticking in gear?

When the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) isn't engaging or locks in engagement the light flashes a warning...The TCC solenoid may stick due to dirty transmission fluid...If the Check Engine Light
(CEL) is not lit have your transmission fluid changed...If it is lit the code is probably pointing at a defective TCC, Computer (PCM) or the clutch itself... you can take the vehicle to an auto parts store and have them read and define the trouble code for free...saailer

I have a 1989 Cadillac brougham rear wheel drive my question is with the transmisson it is automatic with overdrive the problem is it runes great but it won't shift into overdrive unlil u drive it abit...

Not supposed to shift into overdrive until the engine is warmed up and trans fluid reaches a certain temp. Accelerating in overdrive on a cold engine or cold transmission results in high emissions. so they lock it out until temps increae

Will not shift into overdrive

There is an electronic sensor on the outside of the transmission.Change the filter and fluid and replace sensor. The sensor costs around $150.
"High speed" probably is over drive,so if it is turned off,it can't engage.I have found that cutting the overdrive switch on and off can cause excessive wear and tear on the overdrive.

Regardless have the car scaned for a any codes thay is causing the problem. Just trying to keep the cost of repairs down by know exactly what the ECM has in it's memory for any malfunction that is creating your overdrive from engaging.
Good luck and hope this helps

What are these buttons for? e t c drive & side of shifter

The ETC switch is a transmission control device. When it is not active, the transmissions shifts normally. When the ETC is engaged, it alters the shift points.
Example: the 1-2 upshift occurs normally between 18-20 mph. Now, say you are towing something, or are carrying a heavy load...engage the ETC, and the trans computer will "hold" the 1-2 upshift until 22-24 mph. It is just for that, prolonging the shift points, due to load.

The switch on the side of the shifter is for the Overdrive. Engaged (the OD light is off) the transmission shifts into overdrive. This saves you gas. When the button is dis-engaged (the OD OFF light is on) , the transmission does NOT shift into overdrive. It is best to leave the overdrive ON, and the ECT OFF to obtain maximum fuel mileage. I hope this has answered your question. Please feel free to comment back if you have any other questions. Thanks for chosing FixYa for assistance.

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
