Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee intermittent voltage drop, lose electric

My son at college has a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, inline 6 cyl. Two months ago after starting, interior lights and headlights flickered, gauges went out, battery showed no charging. Thought problem was alternator, so took it to PepBoys (two separate locations) for a bench test and everything passed. Reinstalled the same alternator, no problems for two months until tonight. Same thing happened to him tonight, lights flickered, gauges went out, battery showed no charging, and car died.....again, first thought is the alternator. Any other suggestions as to what we should be looking for to solve this problem? I have heard that a bench test on this alternator may not be accurate as the alternator is computer controlled. Please help or advise to resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

We have a "98 with the same issue. Daughter at college, Jeep died on the Interstate. Same issue as bwalker62. Alt was bench checked and fine. Replaced battery, cleaned all connections and ran fine for several months. Problem reappeared today and had it towed. I'll go this weekend and try to check and clean all connections. Significant oil leak may be fouling the ground? Possible. 200k miles so I've gotten my money out of it and not worth putting a lot into it. Just two more months til graduation. Wooohoooo!!! Will report back with the verdict.

I wont list this as a solution, but it seems that working in the area of the alt may have moved around some wiring...the alt may be OK but perhaps an adjacent wire (maybe a ground) is not well connected. Also check crimped on wire loops on alt connectors..they like to corrode at the crimp where it crushes on the actual wire.

I need to know where the oil pressure sensor is located on my 1996 jeep grand cherokee with 4.0 inline 6 cyl.

It is located on the right passenger side of the engine near the oil filter housing. It threads into the engine block. It may also be located near the distributor on some 1996 models. Disconnect the single wire connected to the sensor, and use a socket to remove it. Wrap the threads of the new one with teflon tape, and install the new one hand tight and then tighten it 1/4 turn more with the socket. Reconnect the electrical connection.
