Look at the tensioner and u will see a slot in the end where a breaker bar will fit into. Install the breaker bar and rotate tensioner clockwise.

Using a 15mm wrench attached to the drive belt tensioner pulley, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release the tension. Remove the drive belt from the pulley. When installing the new drive belt, ensure that the drive belt is routed correctly and note the position of the indicator mark on the tensioner.

Dont know which bolt loosens the belt for alternator changeing. please help 1998 ford expedition. 4.6 liter.

A 3/8" ratchet is needed to attached to the belt tensioner which will allow you to releive the tension to remove and to reinstall the belt. It will fit right inside the square 3/8" square hole on the tensioner

Trying to put belt back on and it has to loop over tensioner pulley?? how does that happen ?

This sounds like a serpentine belt (has grooves on one side) - the smooth side of the belt will lay across the tensioner it's easier (usually) to run the belt around and use the tensioner to set the belt in place (use ratchet and socket).

Or, start with the tensioner and use the alternator (loosen the alternator) to tighten the belt.

Either way you choose, it's best to have two people do it - One hold the tensionor (or pries the altenator to tighten and tightens bolts on alternator) and the other puts the belt over the tensioner; then the person on the tensioner slowly lets off the pressure of the tensioner.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Tips on changing out the alternator for 2004 f150 ford supercab 5.4 v8

First disconnect battery. Next unload tensioner that applys spring tension to serpentine belt. Set belt aside, just take it off on alternator pulley. Try to leave it on all other points that it rides on. No need to take off entire belt, unless you want to change it also. Unbolt alternator bolts & unplug electrical connectors. Reverse procedure to reinstall.

NEED INSTRUCTIONS ON REPLACING ALTERNATOR ON F150 FORD LARIET 1986.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Open the hood and disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the adjusting arm bolt.
  3. Remove the alternator through-bolt. Remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley and lower the alternator.

Some engines are equipped with a ribbed, K-section belt and automatic tensioner. A special tool must be made to remove the tension from the tensioner arm. Loosen the idler pulley pivot and adjuster bolts before using the tool. See the accompanying illustration for tool details.
  1. Label all of the leads to the alternator so that you can install them correctly and disconnect the leads from the alternator.
  2. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
  3. To install, reverse the above procedure. Torque the pivot bolt to 58 ft. lbs.; the adjusting bolt to 25 ft. lbs.; the wire terminal nuts to 60-90 inch lbs.

BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT

The fan belt drives the alternator and water pump. If the belt is too loose, it will slip and the alternator will not be able to produce it rated current. Also, the water pump will not operate efficiently and the engine could overheat.
Check the tension of the belt by pushing your thumb down on the longest span of the belt, midway between the pulleys. Belt deflection should be approximately 1 / 2 inch; (13mm).To adjust the belt tension, proceed as follows:
  1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and the adjusting arm bolts.
  2. Apply pressure on the alternator front housing only, moving the alternator away from the engine to tighten the belt. Do not apply pressure to the rear of the cast aluminum housing of an alternator; damage to the housing could result.
  3. Tighten the alternator mounting bolt and the adjusting arm bolts when the correct tension is reached.
