Question about 1990 Toyota Celica

1990 Celica GT #4 cylinder is misfiring intermittently

Have changed all spark plugs and wires,distrib.cap,rotor, with no correction. Also, found oil getting into distr.cap. Having distributor replaced but mechanic not convinced this will solve problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    just got car back after replacing distributor. Did not correct the problem. Again, this is intermittent so not occurring all the time. When car is not acting up runs very smooth. When not running good is very rough idling and sputters no power on acceleration. Can take care out of drive and car idles smooth. Need suggestions. Thanks

    2-20-09- Replaced the distributor-no change in way engine is running. Changed all spark plugs and wires again,replaced dist.cap and rotor again. Changed coil, and ignitor still no change. Mechanic still believes #4 cylinder is misfiring based on the way the spark plugs look.Any help would be appreciated.

    I have almost the same problem with a 1991 Celica GTS 5 speed. Although mine seems to run poor all the time now. The gas mileage has dropped from 26-28 down to 20 mpg. Did all you did, even changed the fuel filter. Anybody out there that can help? The mechanic is saying it may need a timing belt, but it runs rough on idle between 800RPM-1100RPM. I don't want to go to the expense of a timing belt...

Shaft seal in dist is bad may be able to replace might have to replace dist

START THE ENGINE AND LIFT THE IGNITION WIRE LISTEN FOR SPARKS.IF ONE OR MORE CYLINDERS DON'T CHANGE THE WAY IS RUNNING ,YOU GOT THE BAD CYLINDER. I have a 98 honda accord 5 spd it has a 4cyl motor vtech i just need to know how to fix a miss fire in cylinder 2 and wich one is cylinder 2


Cylinder #2 is the the second spark plug counting from the right to left.
EX.Below are spark plug on engine

Your misfire can be cause by couple of things but the cheapest way that you can try to fix your car is to do a tune up by replacing:
1)all spark plugs
2)do a oil change
3)spark plug wires
3)distributor cap and rotor

note misfire can be cause by:
1.bad gas
2.spark plug and/or wire
3.distributor cap and/or rotor
4.valve adjustment
5.injector
6.off timing
7.ECM
8.bad wiring(power, ground or feed line)

Tuned up car changed 02 sensor full tank of fuel still running rough


Oxygen sensor only report the condition of the engine the rough running condition can range from a worn sparkplug wires to worn sparkplugs to valve problems to injector problems. with the cadillac deville a tune up should be the first attempt to smooth the rough idle with the inspection of the cap and rotor cap and rotor do have a tendancy to arc internally and create misfire so does sparkplug wire that can leak spark voltage to ground and create misfire. the spark plug wire especially if they are brittle and hard can create issues

Probably you have a cracked or otherwise bad Distributor Cap. I would have changed the dist. cap and rotor first, and probably the wires too. You said you changed the boots, did that include the wires?

Pay attention to the order of wires before removing from cap. Draw yourself a diagram.
Are you sure you returned the plug wires to correct plug?

Got a 1990 dodge ram charger with a 360 in it. got fire from coil to distriber but not to moter . not the wires or pluges. so help


it could be the rotor arm or dissy cap worn i had the same fault with my rangerover v8 i changed them and it was fine

I have 1990 Celica GT 2200. no spark to plugs/power to fuel pump


need to change rotor and cap , and might as well change wires and spark plugs if its due for a tuneup! yeah have your ignition control module check if it doesn't start after replacing every thing else.

The 5sfe is notorious for distributor problems. You'll get correct resistance readings on the primary and secondary coils, but your spark looks weak. Should see a bright blue spark with an audible POP when sparking. On some 5sfe engines, the coils are located in an all-in-one pacakage inside the distributor. You'll know if you have this one if the only large spark plug type wires connected to the distributor cap count 4 and go to the 4 cylinders. There will not be a center wire coming from a coil. This is the distributor that has issues. I am on my third one now. Same symptoms every time. I know exactly what to change when it happens, and it fixes it every time. Luckily, It's only about $95 if you do your searching well enough. Good luck

Sounds like misfire. Change spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor , fuel and air filters. Check for oil in spark plug holes. if oil found change valve cover gasket spark plug orings. they can leak oil into spark plug holes and cause misfire.
