Question about 1985 Toyota Passenger

1 Answer

Toyota Town Ace, 2-litre turbo. G reg. Diesel automatic (UK)

Help!!! Toyota Town Ace, 2-litre turbo. G reg. Old i know, but in excellent body condition. Apparently it had a recon engine 2 to 3 years ago and a new starter motor when I bought it. It works perfect! Until, intermittently, usually when i have already driven it for a while, can be short or long, that when i try to start it again, it just clicks!!? It can take 2 seconds up to 45 minutes, before it will start again, and then no problem again, until the next time. It can go with no problem 7 out of 10 times, but its always at the most inconvenient times.
I've had another starter motor put on (apparently, difficult to know, I’m a girl!!) Still does the same. I feel it maybes something to do with that the central consol, where the shift stick is gets warm. Is the engine getting too hot? Doing something to the starter motor, solenoids?? r? Fan belt slips slightly, but only when wet, not for long. Seems to be circular pulley when looking at engine, without a belt on it?? Could it be an ignition problem? Keyhole, the steering column, which moves up and down? Loose wires/connections somewhere? Please help?

Do the easy things first: Check the condition of the battery terminals (bear in mind that you may lose the radio code when disconnecting the battery..).

Make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. Check that the cables themselves haven't split and corroded.

In particular, check the earth cable - the black cable - on both the battery and where it connects to the engine/bodywork. Loosen and clean the connector where it attaches to the engine/bodywork. A 'poor earth' can cause the symptoms you describe.

A slipping fan belt is caused by either a worn belt or a worn pulley (or a combination of both). The pulley without a belt on would be to supply services to something else.. such as power steering or air conditioning. There may not have been a belt on that pulley in the first place .. you may not have power steering and/or air conditioning fitted to the car..?

Your automatic gear lever does get warm .. it's just that you've never noticed before and are beginning to imagine things..

Your steering column is adjustable? It should be able to be locked in place within seconds.

Your problems seem to be very minor. If in doubt - for your own peace of mind - call in at a small workshop and ask them. But do check the battery terminals and earth lead first...

If it is clicking, the solenoid is activating as it should so there is either a wire loose on the solenoid, a wire loose on the starter motor or the starter motor needs new brushes.
An old trick if the starter motor needs brushes is to hit it with a lump of wood to jar it.

SOURCE: transmission

Welcome to FIxYa.
As a Toyota Service Manager, my opinion is that you may have the wrong transmission fluid in your car.
The RAV/4 takes Toyota "Type T-4" ATF.
Using anything else will definitely cause you shifting problems.
My advice: Get the trans re-flushed with "Type T-4" as soon as possible, to avoid potential internal damage.

Thanks for choosing FIxYa for assistance; a FIxYa rating for my advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can a subaru engine fit in a toyota estima? has anybody tried it and got successful? i want to change my 2.2 turbo diesel engine to a 2 litre twin turbo subaru engine

No. engine mounts, electrics, ecu, axels and a whole lot of other stuff would need to be changed and cut and welded.even after that you could have a host of other difficulties. not an easy task for even the experienced engineer.

1996 Automatic Diesel Toyota Town Ace, when hot meets cold that's what can happen. It may take a few days wait but check your filter and bearings. Fuel needs to flow to the filter and a seriously strong battery power is needed to kick it over. Idle it to let off smoke and clear exhaust. That should hopefully work.

Toyota Avensis D4D 2004 2.0L DIESEL

Hi there!

I think you will probably have to use two sources of information for work in this.

Info on the Toyota Diesel engine is downladable from this Website -

And a copy of the Haynes manual for the Petrol version is available Here for a reasonable cost -

Most sections will be covered between these two sources.

If this resolves your question, please rate as Fixya.
Thank you.
