I have a 5 speed manual C70 w/ 2.3 HPT engine. I only have 89k on it and when in neutral, if I rev just past 2200rpm, there's a knocking noise, but at idle, no knocking. But as soon as I get into first gear, the knocking starts again after 2200rpms and progressively continues , until I shift into the next gear, all the way up to 5th. Also, reviving past 2200rpms, the car sounds & feels like it's running rough! I can really hear it while on the freeway, when driving in the fast lane, you can hear the knocking sound bouncing off the center divide. Please help me diagnose the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

The cheap fix: Speed sensor connected to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). That screws up the engine control module and could throw you into limp home mode. Expensive fix: Transmission control module. Start with the speed sensor. Suggest that to your mechanic and get a second opinion before changing out the TCM. It's a simple plug and swap, but the module is expensive. I bought a spare on Ebay for my Volvo for $10. The TCU, I believe, lives under the right front kick panel, at least that's where it is on my 740.

It could be the filter. Has the fuel been changed after storage? I would also thing the Carburetor or the fuel injectors might need to be cleaned.

Remove your fuse block cover and look in with a flashlight, towards the passenger side rear you'll see a white tall relay. if you can get your fingers on it pull it out and crack loose the plastic housing, take the housing off and with a fingernail fileboard, clean the contacts between the closing contact. after doing this take a piece of fiberglas tape and tape closed the relay contact. This will leave the car in overdrive mode all the time. Why not, unless you want to pay nearly 110-130 dollars for the relay. The color "might" be black but the last one I did was white. Make sure by looking up the relay legend on the rear of the fuseblock cover. You didn't mention the yellow upwards pointing arrow on the dash while you're driving, that concerns me, although the last one was a 1990 740. Best of luck. P.S. The only reason you would not want overdrive is to pull a trailer up a mountainside and I don't think you want to be doing that with "this" car, right? Good luck my friend.Dana
Testimonial: "My wife had read that this might be a relay problem - I really appreciate the detailed advice on how to rig that, but I might just get another one."

MODEL: MY 2001-2002 S60, V70, V70 XC
SUBJECT: Shift Quality Issues due to B4 Servo Cover Failure, 2-3 upshift harshness or flare
CHASSIS: These chassis breaks are approximate:
S60: 062000-152000
V70: 116000-230000
V70 XC: 036000-067100
TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER: The first 3 digits of the serial number on the affected transmissions will be between 01C (March 2001) and 01L (December 2001).
DESCRIPTION:
In the AW 55-50, brake number four (B4), is only applied in 3rd gear. The B4 is applied by a piston, which is covered by an aluminum cap. This cap has a steel washer crimped to its inside surface, and a rubber cushion that sits between the cover and the washer.
If this washer breaks free from the crimps it will become concaved because of the B4 piston return spring pressure.
This loose washer can cause:
-
" 2-3 upshift flare / slip
-
" Harsh 2-3 upshifts
-
" 3-4 upshift flare / slip
-
" Harsh 4-3 downshifts
Replacing the broken B4 cover with a new one (PN 30651771) will remedy these symptoms.
