Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

Can't get car out of park

1997 camry stopped running. I went to jump it and 16 year old son tried to start it. Well now the key will not turn in the ignition I guess tumblers are messed up. How can I get it in out of park to tow it a block to my house?

Park will only lock the wheels the transmission drive. Have the tow truck pick up that axle, release the handbrakes and tow.

Disconnect the clevis pin and pull it out ,on the end of the cable ,connects cable to gearchange linkage ,then move the lever to neutral with a pair of grips or a tyre lever.Next time get a manual as only old women and pretty boys have a auto.Us macho men from spain wouldnt be seen dead in a old ladys car.

97 buick century was running after jump started, when put in reverse it died and wont start when jump start, no chimes or lights come on at all

Dangerous practice to try & jump a near dead battery

Always try charging a battery, that is only a couple years
old & not run down more than two or three times

If the battery is dead & reads less than 12 volts, have a parts
store test it or just replace it.

Jumping a cars battery is not a fix for anything,so I fail to
see how your lost & have not addressed the battery issue,
so you can continue on with other testing,if needed

You need a better battery. When you hook the amp meter and read 0.3 the ECM needs to sleep

When turning key all the way over it simply does nothing what could it be

Hi,
You'll likely need a new ignition switch. (The electrical side) You can confirm this by pulling the lower steering cover when issue is occurring, and using a test light on the black and yellow wire when turning key to "Start" position. If test light doesn't illuminate, replace switch. (Easy)

Cant turn key to start 1997 toyota camry. tried all keys to car. after hours of jiggling key it catches and turns ignition to start. Do I need to replace ignition or tumblers in switch. If so HOW

Hello,
Yes you do need to charge the ignition barrel as it sounds as if the current one knakered, try going to the scrappy but be sure to get a barrel that they have the keys for also remember to keep your other keys for your car.

91 toyota camry 4 cyl. It will not start even with

Hi Mike
Try lightly tapping the starter with a spanner and at the same time turning the key to start, if it starts you need the starter overhauled.

Key won't turn in Ignition

Have you tried moving the gear shift back and forth? The shifter is connected by a cable to your ignition switch. It keeps folks from putting the car in neutral when the steering and ignition is locked, so they don't take the car when you're not around. If moving the shifter helps, then maybe that cable has stretched some and needs replaced. If not, then perhaps an ignition lock cylinder and key are in order.
