Question about 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

7 Answers

1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE has clunking sound that produces vibration that I can feel in accelerator. Sound only in front end. Only happens when I accelerate, but the car occassionally hestiates ( engine almost cuts out)and then seems to "catch" and goes. also engine has to revv higher than usual for the automatic transmission to shift. Think it might be transmission filter needs to be changed ( fluid is dark), fuel filter , engine mounts ( although the engine doesn't move. ) Would hate to have to consider the $$ involved with replacing tramsmission entirely.

You have more than one problem!clunking sound if continues while accelerating sounds like a inner cv joint on one of the axles is binding .this will cause a vibration wobble.second hesitation could be spark plug wires braking down.dark fluid transmission should be flushed.with filter changed .

a bad cv joint doesnt have to be turning when the inner joint is binding up!

It does sound like the transmission you may want to try all the other filters and what not or find a rebuilt one and have it put in or look at buying anather van and swap it out your self

U are descrbing transmission problem, this model has a very poor record on the automatic trans, there are many class action law suits about the poor reliablity of trans, have u contacted Chrysler to see if they will help? a new/rebuilt trans is around $3000.00 installed.

Sounds like you have more then one problem. Once you definitely need a fluid and filter change in the tranny, most likely the permanent damge has been done and will only be so long before you need to replace the tranny. Also the banging when you accelerate sounds like CV joints. If you need further assistance let me know. Also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,
Lee

Yes you would want to get the tranny serviced, chrysler uses a fiber filter that should be changed every 25 to 30k miles or it tends to stop up.
If the vibration is on accel it can be may things but if it feels like it is in the drive line then it would be an inside CV joint causing it.

However it doesn't mean that one of the inner CV joints is actually bad it could be just be binding caused by a motor mount being broken or loose so that the motor moves far enough to put it into a bind.

Vibration, usually upon acceleration? Sounds like the passenger side axle may be (possibly)wearing as the clearances inside the axle wear out, creating excessive movement when under a load (acceleration). Usually a rapid vibration that increases as you speed up.

I have a 1996 Plym. Grand Voyager, hesitation & stalling.

If it works well at speed and acts up when slowing or stopped it doesn't sound like fuel filter or pump. You can try running injector cleaner through the engine to clean the carborator injectors or fuel injectors if you have those. Look at replacing the plugs and wires on the motor.
