I'd start with the fuel filter (easiest/cheapest solution). If that doesn't work, check your air filter, replace if you have even a question about it, also very cheap solution. From there, I'd go to the spark plugs, then check the timing. Still no fix, it might be worth taking to shop to put on computer. If you don't have the shop as an option, and are relatively handy, look up directions on dropping gas tank, fully flush out, and fill back up with a few gallons of premium gas. Turn key on, without starting, for a few seconds, to allow the fuel pump to get the gas to the engine. (speaking of fuel pumps, if yours is in your tank, might as well replace when tank is down).
If none of that works, its most definitely the fuel injectors. Try cleaning 1st then replacement.
Good luck

97 lumina, 3.1. Starts runs smooth, drive for 30

I just recently have been fighting the same problem with the same make/model/year vehicle. For myself, I would drive off and on through the day and it would run fine. Then suddenly after a start it would run rough and die. I would have to wait 20 to 60 mins before it would start again. I had it checked and fuel pump was only putting out around 19 psi. It should be around 41 psi. Had fuel pump replaced and no more problems. Furthermore, now it runs so much better. It's funny how over time I didn't notice how the performance was slowly degrading. Unfortunaley fuel pumps for this car run around $300.

How do I replace the timing chain and gears on my 97 chevy lumina, engine is 3.1L.

Remove the balancer, alternator, P/S pump and belt tensioner. Remove the front cover and then the chain. If the chain has jumped, the 3.1 is an interference motor.

Hard start

Its your fuel pump.I had the same plomblem not too long ago.I was spraying either in to start it.I have a 97 chevy truck witch requires 65 psi to start and 55 to run properly. You need to find out much psi you need to start it.You can probaly look in your manual or just make a few calls. My truck had 55 psi and it ran fine i just had to get it running first.Good luck.I wonder if that fuel pressure regulator was a waste of time like it was for me.
