I took the car to the Mercury Dealer today, after jump starting the car, because the lights were on all night and they said it indeed was the running light module. They said it would cost around $250.00 for them to replace it or they could just detatch the running lights and we could use the lights manually. That would cost $50.00 ffor them to do. So, we went with the turning it off for 50. At least they didn't talk me into some expensive repair job or add any others to the one I came in for, like some dealer service garages have done to me.

    Thanks for the help.

SOURCE: I have a mercury sable

did you try the DLR? ( daylight running light switch ) It's located under the battery in the left front fender below the headlight and it's attached to the radiator support. (Could they have made this any more difficult?) With the fuse still out, check the wires and the connector for any signs of shorting or fraying. If they check out, reinstall the fuse and use your voltmeter to get a voltage reading from the case of the DRL to the chassis. If you do get a reading, it means the case has lost its ground connection. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the DRL, clean the mounting area and remount it. If the voltage reading falls to 0 and the lights are still on, the DRL has an internal short and must be replaced, this happens a lot on the taurus and sable

I'm going to be a bad man here but... you might want to change the headlight switch itself. Had that happen before and that was the fix.

Headlights, low beams work fine. when high beams are turned on, the left side goes out completely and there is no change to the right side.

Mercury Sable auto headlights on off switch troubleshooting

More than liekly it isn't your switch. You have a ambient light sensor (sometimes called a photocell or amplifier) that detects how dark or light outside which in turn turns the lights on or off. this sensor is located under that "grille" just below the windshield. Sometimes water can stand in there and cause that sensor to go faulty. I say it's that in most cases because a switch, if it goes in most cases it just goes period. It is a fairly common problem also. Hope this helps....

I'm showing a brown wire coming out of the headlight switch on 96-99 models going to the park lights.
Do you have power on that circuit leaving the headlight switch ?

2002 Grand Marquis headlights won't turn off with switch, won't go out until vehicle is turned off

Might these be "driving lights"?
Cars with "driving lights" have lights that are supposed to stay on all the time the engine is running.
These lights not only look like headlights, in fact some cars even have the headlights themselves come on when the engine is running. Look as some more (several) 2002 Grand Marquis's and see if they are the same.
Be blessed.

Why won't the headlights turn on? I've checked the fuses and changed the bulbs the headlights still don't come on. It's happened a few times before.

If it is not getting power then it's either the switch or the relay. Check or replace the relay before you go to the switch.

How do I replace Headlight switch on 1997 Mercury Sable? My battery won't hold charge. I have used battery charger to charge my battery, but a day later I need to do it again. My headlight switch, is not...

Try disconnecting your park lights after you have a charged battery to see if that is the reason your battery is going dead. If it's still charged then most likely, there's your problem. I would try this before tackling the switch.

1999 Mercury Sable Dome Light won't shut off

Next to the headlight switch is a dimmer dial for the interior dash lights... if you turn it all the way up, the interior lights remain on... there is a "detent" on the dimmer. turn the interior dash lights all the way full on ...you'll feel the detent, then turn it down back past the detent a little bit...that should cancel the interior courtesy lights... wait a bit because the interior lights are sometimes on delay timers....
good luck let me know what happens.
