Its normal for any car with a battery junction box or under hood fuse panel.

THIS IS NORMAL FOR A JAPANESE CHARGING SYSTEM, THE CAR WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT THE BATTERY INSTALLED AND HOOKED UP.

Could be the lockup torque converter is not unlocking. If you leave it in drive but don't hold the brake, does it still die? Does it go forward faster than normal for that condition (3-5 MPH)?

There is a diode in the alternator that you fried the instant you disconnected the battery....go get a new alternator. This was an acceptable test on much older cars, but not these days......

P-reg 96 escort, my battery is dead after only a few hours however when the car is running (after jump starting it) the immobilisor light comes on for about a minute, then starts to flash every 3 seconds....

Bad Alternator.
After Starting or Jumping your vehicle: Remove the Negative Cable from the Battery.
If the Engine dies or runs really rough it is a bad Alternator.
The Battery Starts the Engine and runs nominal operations. The Alternator runs the Engine after it is Started by the Battery.
If the Engine does not die or runs really rough after removing the Negative Cable, then you have a malfunctioning Battery.

did it stay running when connected to the car giving the boost? if so then the alternator is not charging the electrical system, get it serviced or replaced.

a battery that is run down that far needs charging for a time to be fully charged.accessories[lights'ac'radio etc]drawing voltage will extend the time needed.the moment it 'snapped out of it' is when the charging system caught up with the demand.
