Question about 1993 Plymouth Sundance

1 Answer

Hello: My 1993 plymouth sundance (2.2L) will not start. I sprayed ether into the intake and it doesn't spark. I changed the plugs, distributor cap, rotor button, and pick up coil. The coil running to the distributor cap is good - got it checked at a shop. I tested to see if the spark plugs were getting any spark by putting them close to the spark wires and trying to turn the key, but no spark at all. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

I have a 1994 plymouth sundance 2.5l. i now call it the sundevil because of what i had 2 do to it... i replaced tranny , radiator, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel relay, thermostat, coil ignition, oil...

You can EXPECT to have to replace a few parts on a 17-year-old car...Doesn't make it a devil, just makes it a senior citizen in need of a little TLC...:)
The MOST LIKELY cause of your problem is the ignition pick-up coil. It is located under the distributor cap and looks like the picture below.

Cranks but wont start

you need to check for spark at the plugs while cranking.then check for fuel entering the intake at the don`t say if its a 4 or 6 cylinder.if its a 4 cylinder you can look into the throttle body while someone cranks the motor and you should see fuel squirting into the intake.if you have no spark then check to make sure the cap and rotor is in good condition and the rotor is turning(if not then the timing belt maybe broken and needs replacing.also check the plugs as if they are worn so bad you won`t get any spark.a common problem on these is the coil pickup in the distributor going bad.there is a 2 wire connector that comes out of the distributor with a plug,if you follow this wire back into the distributor you will see the pickup.also check and see if you can hear the fuel pump running while cranking, you may have a bad fuel may have to remove the gas cap and listen at the filler neck or listen under the car were the gas tank is.if the fuel pump is not running then you can hit the fuel tank in the middle while someone cranks the motor and it might start.if so then the fuel pump is no good another common problem.there is a fuel pump relay under the hood on the drivers side that sometimes goes bad or there is bad connections.most of this checking is good for the 6 cylinder as well except you can see the fuel squirting into the could also be a bad computer that will have to be checked out at a shop.

No spark, gets fuel, turns over , wont start

Check coil (make sure ign switch is giving it B+ and the ignition module is making the coil fire the high voltage)
If B+ is comming out of coil then your losing it from the coil to the plugs . Wires (If applicable rotor and distributor cap and distributor are the remaing items).
These items can be visually inspected for cracks and carbon build up on the rotor. Good luck

I have a 1989 sundance 2.5l turbo was a great running car but it died. i have no spark! the tach starting jumping and then just died. i replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil, and distributor...

Check to make sure you have 12 volts going to the distributor. You should be able to check this at the connecter going into the distributor. Unplug it, turn the key switch to "on", connect the ground on your test light or meter to a bolt on the engine and you should have power. If not, I would start checking all of your fuses and if they are all good, then I would start tracing the wire back looking for burns or cuts.

Hi I am vortash to check if the cylinders are getting fuel just turn the vehicles engine few times then remove a spark plug to see it it is wet if it is not a fuel problem more likely spark failure replace plugs as they can fail under pressure and check for spark ,, may als be a head gasket problem so check compression and see if above 140 0r in the green with each cylinder . hope this helps regards vortash

Car won't start

check backnnector on distributor assy. It's hard to find because is on the side just in the point nobody reach. Often it missconnect or broke. check, fix or re adjust as needed. check firing order of cables If not result.... 1.-unplug any spark cable and put a screwdriver inside it and place it in a safe place near a ground point. The object is try to see the spark jumping to ground. 1 or 2 cm will work for it. If you see spark, check fuel pump circuitry. uncap carburator and see if injectors spray gas when you try to engine. If you can see spark, change module inside the distributor cap.
if injector doesn't spray, check fuel pump, you must hear it for few seconds when you turn key to accs if you place your ear near thank. fuel pump work for few seconds but no spray on injectors: the same module above mentioned. if injector sprays and spark jump, the car must start

My 1993 Honda prelude has problems starting in the cold weather. We have replaced the relay like suggested by their mechanic but still no luck. We have had to jumper the wires and that is the only reason...

Try to start with a less expensive procedure. In addition to relay I would check the spark plugs, wiring set and distributor cap. Also coolant temperature sensor can be a problem. Try to warm up the endine block of car with dry heat (hair fan or heat gun, but gently). Sometimes it helps. If it works problem is spurk plugs, distributor cap or coolant sensor. Also would be usefull to chek the fuel filter.
But first for cold weather sometimes it worthy to use the injector cleaner/or octane buster and better fuel which evaporates better and less viscouse motor oil. And of course check the battery.
Good Luck
