Question about 2002 Kia Rio
Okay so about a month ago, the check engine light came on in the car. Checked all fluid levels and caps and everything was fine. So about 2 weeks ago the light goes off until today...the check engine light just came back on...
The car is running fine (no leaks, smells, stalls, it's not overheating)..if the light wasn't on, I wouldn't know anything was wrong...
any ideas at all..
ps...has new air filter, regular oil changes etc..
On my wife's car the mechanic said it was gas cap. (NOT!!) I cleared with an OBD reader and the code suggested a leak in the evatorator system. I found a steel tube that was routed over the weld flange of the gas tank. It went from the front of the car, down the drivers side, over the weld joing of the gas tank and into a charcoal evaporator filter on the passengers side near the rear wheel. The tube crossing over the gas tank crumbled when I touched it. I replaced it with a short piece of reinforced neoprene hose (to cross over the gas tank) and a couple of hose clamps. Cost of parts was about $5.00. Havn't seen Check Engine since. Good luck

The check engine light is not caused by any wrong fluid level or dirty air filter or anything else like that, it is caused by well over 100 faults that can occur in the computer controlled electronic engine and emission controls, u will need to go to a Kragen or Autozone parts store and get a free OBD 2 fault code test to get the code that set your light.

I had an light engine issue until I properly screwed the gas cap on tightly, apparently it can read that there are fumes if you don't close it tightly enough.
Hope that helps. It stopped as soon as I did that.
