Question about BMW 535

My '85 535i will not start

Details:i parked it and took the battery out to go purchase an '84 bmw528e.i went and got the 528 and returned to where i parked the 535i and reinstalled the battery to drive it home and it would not start.the motor turned over, but sounded like the battery was drained.with little time,i just put the batt back in the 528e,which had no problem with the same battery and drove home.

i came back the next day to further investigate the problem.i found that the battery cranked the motor slow and when hooked up to jumper cables it turned faster but didnt sound like it was firing.added ether and nada.found it was getting fuel but no fire to the plugs.the coil is getting power and it works on the other bmw.i started tracing wires from the + batt post and found three red wires going into the main relay that had no continuity.traced these wires into the main engine harness.it's like i have a dead short in my ignition circuit but the weird thing is,i dont know why.the car had been driving fine for over a year and gave no indication of a problem bf this happened.i would like to get help with figuring out the electrical system and diagnosing this problem.do i have a bad computer?a bad crank sensor?a defective distributor?and how does something like that just all of a sudden quit with no warning?ive looked at all the wires connected to the battery cable to see if i had damaged or broke one and found nothing-HELP!

I have a 1985 535i that starts fine at times, sometimes turn the key over and nothing, sometimes a strange clicking noise from under the hood. Totally random problem. Had the ignition switch replaced, was fine for a while. Battery has been replaced twice. Any suggestions 'cause I can't trust this car!

Check the lt and the ht leads, then i would look at the rotor arm in the distributer, check to see if the rotor arm is turning.

Running the A/c in city traffic can cause this. You may nave a fan out. Start the car with out the A/c on, open the hood check the rad. fan, then turn on the A/c and recheck the fan - it should be on now. If not, we have a problem with the fan circuit. Check that and repost.

Welcome to the world of BMW's. return the car to the seller. you got a bad one. You got an electrical short draining the battery. Bring a blank check and sign it over to the dealer. They're going to have to run through the entire electrical system to find the short. That work alone is worth more than the a used up 2001 325i.

buy a cheap volt meter check voltage on both sides of the starter seleniod on the fenderwell if you have 12 volts on both sides while cranking test voltage at starter if you have 12 volts at starter with fully charged battery and it doesnt start you will need a starter it also sounds like you might need an alternator once you can get it started

Most likely:
1. The battery has a dead cell.
2. The battery terminals need to be cleaned. Remove both battery cables and clean cable clamps and battery terminals. May not need a boost.
3. The negative cable is loose where it is connected to engine ground. Or damaged, corroded, or otherwise not making a good connection.

When turning key all the way over it simply does nothing what could it be

Hi,
You'll likely need a new ignition switch. (The electrical side) You can confirm this by pulling the lower steering cover when issue is occurring, and using a test light on the black and yellow wire when turning key to "Start" position. If test light doesn't illuminate, replace switch. (Easy)

All the classic symptoms of a bad starter. A bad starter will work fine when cold but once it heats up, will require more power to work. Shame on the dealer for not recognizing this! A new battery with a full charge will work for a little while but if its the starter, I'm sure the problem will return Have your charging system checked out (most places will do this free of charge) Assuming the charging system checks out ok, I'd have the starter checked. I hope this solution provided you with the information you were looking for. Best of luck!
